In this paper, the instability of layered two-phase flows caused by the presence of a soluble surfactant (or a surface active solute) is studied. The fluids have different viscosities, but are density matched to focus on Marangoni effects. The fluids flow between two flat plates, which are maintained at different solute concentrations. This establishes a constant flux of solute from one fluid to the other in the base state. A linear stability analysis is performed, using a combination of asymptotic and numerical methods. In the creeping flow regime, Marangoni stresses destabilize the flow, provided a concentration gradient is maintained across the fluids. One long wave and two short wave Marangoni instability modes arise, in different regions of parameter space. A well-defined condition for the long wave instability is determined in terms of the viscosity and thickness ratios of the fluids, and the direction of mass transfer. Energy budget calculations show that the Marangoni stresses that drive long and short wave instabilities have distinct origins. The former is caused by interface deformation while the latter is associated with convection by the disturbance flow. Consequently, even when the interface is non-deforming (in the large interfacial tension limit), the flow can become unstable to short wave disturbances. On increasing $Re$, the viscosity-induced interfacial instability comes into play. This mode is shown to either suppress or enhance the Marangoni instability, depending on the viscosity and thickness ratios. This analysis is relevant to applications such as solvent extraction in microchannels, in which a surface-active solute is transferred between fluids in parallel stratified flow. It is also applicable to the thermocapillary problem of layered flow between heated plates.

The physicochemical hydrodynamics of bubbles and droplets out of equilibrium, in particular with phase transitions, displays surprisingly rich and often counterintuitive phenomena. Here we experimentally and theoretically study the nucleation and ear ly evolution of plasmonic bubbles in a binary liquid consisting of water and ethanol. Remarkably, the submillimeter plasmonic bubble is found to be periodically attracted to and repelled from the nanoparticle-decorated substrate, with frequencies of around a few kHz. We identify the competition between solutal and thermal Marangoni forces as origin of the periodic bouncing. The former arises due to the selective vaporization of ethanol at the substrates side of the bubble, leading to a solutal Marangoni flow towards the hot substrate, which pushes the bubble away. The latter arises due to the temperature gradient across the bubble, leading to a thermal Marangoni flow away from the substrate which sucks the bubble towards it. We study the dependence of the frequency of the bouncing phenomenon from the control parameters of the system, namely the ethanol fraction and the laser power for the plasmonic heating. Our findings can be generalized to boiling and electrolytically or catalytically generated bubbles in multicomponent liquids.
Marangoni instabilities can emerge when a liquid interface is subjected to a concentration or temperature gradient. It is generally believed that for these instabilities bulk effects like buoyancy are negligible as compared to interfacial forces, esp ecially on small scales. Consequently, the effect of a stable stratification on the Marangoni instability has hitherto been ignored. Here we report, for an immiscible drop immersed in a stably stratified ethanol-water mixture, a new type of oscillatory solutal Marangoni instability which is triggered once the stratification has reached a critical value. We experimentally explore the parameter space spanned by the stratification strength and the drop size and theoretically explain the observed crossover from levitating to bouncing by balancing the advection and diffusion around the drop. Finally, the effect of the stable stratification on the Marangoni instability is surprisingly amplified in confined geometries, leading to an earlier onset.

In this investigation we revisit the concept of effective free surfaces arising in the solution of the time-averaged fluid dynamics equations in the presence of free boundaries. This work is motivated by applications of the optimization and optimal c ontrol theory to problems involving free surfaces, where the time-dependent formulations lead to many technical difficulties which are however alleviated when steady governing equations are used instead. By introducing a number of precisely stated assumptions, we develop and validate an approach in which the interface between the different phases, understood in the time-averaged sense, is sharp. In the proposed formulation the terms representing the fluctuations of the free boundaries and of the hydrodynamic quantities appear as boundary conditions on the effective surface and require suitable closure models. As a simple model problem we consider impingement of free-falling droplets onto a fluid in a pool with a free surface, and a simple algebraic closure model is proposed for this system. The resulting averaged equations are of the free-boundary type and an efficient computational approach based on shape optimization formulation is developed for their solution. The computed effective surfaces exhibit consistent dependence on the problem parameters and compare favorably with the results obtained when the data from the actual time-dependent problem is used in lieu of the closure model.
We reveal and investigate a new type of linear axisymmetric helical magnetorotational instability which is capable of destabilizing viscous and resistive rotational flows with radially increasing angular velocity, or positive shear. This instability is double-diffusive by nature and is different from the more familiar helical magnetorotational instability, operating at positive shear above the Liu limit, in that it works instead for a wide range of the positive shear when ${rm (i)}$ a combination of axial/poloidal and azimuthal/toroidal magnetic fields is applied and ${rm (ii)}$ the magnetic Prandtl number is not too close to unity. We study this instability first with radially local WKB analysis and then confirm its existence using a global stability analysis of the magnetized flow between two rotating cylinders with conducting or insulating boundaries. From an experimental point of view, we also demonstrate the presence of the new instability in a magnetized viscous and resistive Taylor-Couette flow with positive shear for such values of the flow parameters, which can be realized in upcoming experiments at the DRESDYN facility. Finally, this instability might have implications for the dynamics of the equatorial parts of the solar tachocline and dynamo action there, since the above two necessary conditions for the instability to take place are satisfied in this region. Our global stability calculations for the tachocline-like configuration, representing a thin rotating cylindrical layer with the appropriate boundary conditions -- conducting inner and insulating outer cylinders -- and the values of the flow parameters, indicate that it can indeed arise in this case with a characteristic growth time comparable to the solar cycle period.
Surface coatings and patterning technologies are essential for various physicochemical applications. In this Letter, we describe key parameters to achieve uniform particle coatings from binary solutions: First, multiple sequential Marangoni flows, se t by solute and surfactant simultaneously, prevent non-uniform particle distributions and continuously mix suspended materials during droplet evaporation. Second, we show the importance of particle-surface interactions that can be established by surface-adsorbed macromolecules. To achieve a uniform deposit in a binary mixture, a small concentration of surfactant and surface-adsorbed polymer (0.05 wt% each) is sufficient, which offers a new physicochemical avenue for control of coatings.
