In a recent paper, M. Lifshits and E. Setterqvist introduced the taut string of a Brownian motion $w$, defined as the function of minimal quadratic energy on $[0,T]$ staying in a tube of fixed width $h>0$ around $w$. The authors showed a Law of Large Number (L.L.N.) for the quadratic energy spent by the string for a large time $T$. In this note, we exhibit a natural renewal structure for the Brownian taut string, which is directly related to the time decomposition of the Brownian motion in terms of its $h$-extrema (as first introduced by Neveu and Pitman). Using this renewal structure, we derive an expression for the constant in the L.L.N. given by M. Lifshits and E. Setterqvist. In addition, we provide a Central Limit Theorem (C.L.T.) for the fluctuations of the energy spent by the Brownian taut string.

We study geodesics in the Brownian map $(mathcal{S},d, u)$, the random metric measure space which arises as the Gromov-Hausdorff scaling limit of uniformly random planar maps. Our results apply to all geodesics including those between exceptional poi nts. First, we prove a strong and quantitative form of the confluence of geodesics phenomenon which states that any pair of geodesics which are sufficiently close in the Hausdorff distance must coincide with each other except near their endpoints. Then, we show that the intersection of any two geodesics minus their endpoints is connected, the number of geodesics which emanate from a single point and are disjoint except at their starting point is at most $5$, and the maximal number of geodesics which connect any pair of points is $9$. For each $1le k le 9$, we obtain the Hausdorff dimension of the pairs of points connected by exactly $k$ geodesics. For $k=7,8,9$, such pairs have dimension zero and are countably infinite. Further, we classify the (finite number of) possible configurations of geodesics between any pair of points in $mathcal{S}$, up to homeomorphism, and give a dimension upper bound for the set of endpoints in each case. Finally, we show that every geodesic can be approximated arbitrarily well and in a strong sense by a geodesic connecting $ u$-typical points. In particular, this gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Angel, Kolesnik, and Miermont that the geodesic frame of $mathcal{S}$, the union of all of the geodesics in $mathcal{S}$ minus their endpoints, has dimension one, the dimension of a single geodesic.

We review the theory of renewal reward processes, which describes renewal processes that have some cost or reward associated with each cycle. We present a new simplified proof of the renewal reward theorem that mimics the proof of the elementary rene wal theorem and avoids the technicalities in the proof that is presented in most textbooks. Moreover, we mention briefly the extension of the theory to partial rewards, where it is assumed that rewards are not accrued only at renewal epochs but also during the renewal cycle. For this case, we present a counterexample which indicates that the standard conditions for the renewal reward theorem are not sufficient; additional regularity assumptions are necessary. We present a few examples to indicate the usefulness of this theory, where we prove the inspection paradox and Littles law through the renewal reward theorem.
We consider the problem of determining escape probabilities from an interval of a general compound renewal process with drift. This problem is reduced to the solution of a certain integral equation. In an actuarial situation where only negative jumps arise we give a general solution for escape and survival probabilities under Erlang$(n)$ and hypo-exponential arrivals. These ideas are generalized to the class of arrival distributions having rational Laplace transforms. In a general situation with two-sided jumps we also identify important families of solvable cases. A parallelism with the scale function of diffusion processes is drawn.

The Brownian map is a fundamental object in mathematics, in some sense a 2-dimensional analogue of Brownian motion. Here we briefly explain this object and a bit of its history.
We consider the Brownian interlacements model in Euclidean space, introduced by A.S. Sznitman in cite{sznitman2013scaling}. We give estimates for the asymptotics of the visibility in the vacant set. We also consider visibility inside the vacant set o f the Brownian excursion process in the unit disc and show that it undergoes a phase transition regarding visibility to infinity as in cite{benjamini2009visibility}. Additionally, we determine the critical value and that there is no visibility to infinity at the critical intensity.
