Variations in the photometric parameters of stellar systems as a function of their evolution and the stellar populations comprising them are investigated. A set of seven evolutionary models with an exponential decrease in the star-formation rate and 672 models with a secondary burst of star formation are considered. The occurrence of a secondary burst of star formation can shift the position of a stellar system on two-color diagrams to the right or left of the normal color sequence for galaxies and the extinction line. This makes it possible to estimate the composition of the stellar population of a galaxy with a nonmonotonic star formation history from its position on two-color diagrams. Surface photometry in both the optical (UBVRI) and near-IR (JHK) is used to study the stellar populations and star-formation histories in the structural components (nucleus, bulge, disk, spiral arms, bar, ring) of 26 galaxies of various morphological types (from S0 to Sd). Components (nucleus, bulge, bar) with color characteristics corresponding to stellar systems with secondary bursts of star formation are indicated in 10 of the 26 galaxies. The parameters of these secondary bursts are estimated. Five of the 10 galaxies with complex star-formation histories display clear structural perturbations. Appreciable differences in the photometric characteristics of relatively red early-type galaxies (S0-Sb) and relatively blue later-type galaxies (Sb-Sd) have been found. Galaxies of both early and late types are encountered among the Sb-galaxies. Lenticular galaxies do not display different photometric characteristics from early-type spiral galaxies.

In this tutorial paper we summarize how the star formation (SF) history of a galactic region can be derived from the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of its resolved stars. The procedures to build synthetic CMDs and to exploit them to derive the SF his tories (SFHs) are described, as well as the corresponding uncertainties. The SFHs of resolved dwarf galaxies of all morphological types, obtained from the application of the synthetic CMD method, are reviewed and discussed. In short: 1) Only early-type galaxies show evidence of long interruptions in the SF activity; late-type dwarfs present rather continuous, or gasping, SF regimes; 2) A few early-type dwarfs have experienced only one episode of SF activity concentrated at the earliest epochs, whilst many others show extended or recurrent SF activity; 3) No galaxy experiencing now its first SF episode has been found yet; 4) No frequent evidence of strong SF bursts is found; 5) There is no significant difference in the SFH of dwarf irregulars and blue compact dwarfs, except for the current SF rates. Implications of these results on the galaxy formation scenarios are briefly discussed.
Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound systems in the Universe and, as such, play an important role in cosmological studies. An important resource for studying their properties in a statistical manner are homogeneous and large image da tasets covering diverse environments. In this sense, the wide-field images (1.4 deg^{2}) obtained by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) in 12 optical bands, constitute a valuable tool for that type of studies. In this work, we present a photometric analysis of pixel color-magnitude diagrams, corresponding to a sample of 24 galaxies of different morphological types located in the Fornax cluster.
Selecting centrally quiescent galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to create high signal-to-noise (>100) stacked spectra with minimal emission line contamination, we accurately and precisely model the central stellar populations of barre d and unbarred quiescent disk galaxies. By splitting our sample by redshift, we can use the fixed size of the SDSS fiber to model the stellar populations at different radii within galaxies. At 0.02<z<0.04, the SDSS fiber radius corresponds to ~1 kpc, which is the typical half-light radii of both classical bulges and disky pseudobulges. Assuming that the SDSS fiber primarily covers the bulges at these redshifts, our analysis shows that there are no significant differences in the stellar populations, i.e., stellar age, [Fe/H], [Mg/Fe], and [N/Fe], of the bulges of barred vs. unbarred quiescent disk galaxies. Modeling the stellar populations at different redshift intervals from z=0.020 to z=0.085 at fixed stellar masses produces an estimate of the stellar population gradients out to about half the typical effective radius of our sample, assuming null evolution over this ~1 Gyr epoch. We find that there are no noticeable differences in the slopes of the azimuthally averaged gradients of barred vs. unbarred quiescent disk galaxies. These results suggest that bars are not a strong influence on the chemical evolution of quiescent disk galaxies.
We present photometry and long-slit spectroscopy for 12 S0 and spiral galaxies selected from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies. The structural parameters of the sample galaxies are derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey i-band images by performin g a two-dimensional photometric decomposition of the surface brightness distribution. This is assumed to be the sum of the contribution of a S`ersic bulge, an exponential disc, and a Ferrers bar characterized by elliptical and concentric isophotes with constant ellipticity and position angles. The rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles of the stellar component are measured from the spectra obtained along the major axis of galaxies. The radial profiles of the H{beta}, Mg and Fe line-strength indices are derived too. Correlations between the central values of the Mg 2 and Fe line-strength indices and the velocity dispersion are found. The mean age, total metallicity and total {alpha}/Fe enhancement of the stellar population in the centre and at the radius where the bulge gives the same contribution to the total surface brightness as the remaining components are obtained using stellar population models with variable element abundance ratios. We identify intermediate-age bulges with solar metallicity and old bulges with a large spread in metallicity. Most of the sample bulges display super-solar {alpha}/Fe enhancement, no gradient in age and negative gradients of metallicity and {alpha}/Fe enhancement. These findings support a formation scenario via dissipative collapse where environmental effects are remarkably less important than in the assembly of bulges of galaxies in groups and clusters.
We use high-resolution ($approx 10$ pc), zoom-in simulations of a typical (stellar mass $M_starsimeq10^{10}M_odot$) Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at $zsimeq 6$ to investigate the stellar populations of its six dwarf galaxy satellites, whose stellar [gas] masses are in the range $log (M_star/M_odot) simeq 6-9$ [$log (M_{gas}/M_odot) simeq4.3-7.75$]. The properties and evolution of satellites show no dependence on the distance from the central massive LBG ($< 11.5$ kpc). Instead, their star formation and chemical enrichment histories are tightly connected their stellar (and sub-halo) mass. High-mass dwarf galaxies ($rm M_star gtrsim 5times 10^8 M_odot$) experience a long history of star formation, characterised by many merger events. Lower-mass systems go through a series of short star formation episodes, with no signs of mergers; their star formation activity starts relatively late ($zapprox 7$), and it is rapidly quenched by internal stellar feedback. In spite of the different evolutionary patterns, all satellites show a spherical morphology, with ancient and more metal-poor stars located towards the inner regions. All six dwarf satellites experienced high star formation rate ($rm >5,M_odot yr ^{-1}$) bursts, which can be detected by JWST while targeting high-$z$ LBGs.
