The internal angular momentum distribution of a star is key to determine its evolution. Fortunately, the stellar internal rotation can be probed through studies of rotationally-split non-radial oscillation modes. In particular, detection of non-radial gravity modes (g modes) in massive young stars has become feasible recently thanks to the Kepler space mission. Our aim is to derive the internal rotation profile of the Kepler B8V star KIC 10526294 through asteroseismology. We interpret the observed rotational splittings of its dipole g modes using four different approaches based on the best seismic models of the star and their rotational kernels. We show that these kernels can resolve differential rotation the radiative envelope if a smooth rotational profile is assumed and the observational errors are small. Based on Kepler data, we find that the rotation rate near the core-envelope boundary is well constrained to $163pm89$ nHz. The seismic data are consistent with rigid rotation but a profile with counter-rotation within the envelope has a statistical advantage over constant rotation. Our study should be repeated for other massive stars with a variety of stellar parameters in order to deduce the physical conditions that determine the internal rotation profile of young massive stars, with the aim to improve the input physics of their models.

During most of their life, stars fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores. The mixing of chemical elements in the radiative envelope of stars with a convective core is able to replenish the core with extra fuel. If effective, such deep mixing allows stars to live longer and change their evolutionary path. Yet localized observations to constrain internal mixing are absent so far. Gravity modes probe the deep stellar interior near the convective core and allow us to calibrate internal mixing processes. Here we provide core-to-surface mixing profiles inferred from observed dipole gravity modes in 26 rotating stars with masses between 3 and 10 solar masses. We find a wide range of internal mixing levels across the sample. Stellar models with stratified mixing profiles in the envelope reveal the best asteroseismic performance. Our results provide observational guidance for three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of transport processes in the deep interiors of stars.
Context. Large-scale equatorial Rossby modes have been observed on the Sun over the last two solar cycles. Aims. We investigate the impact of the time-varying zonal flows on the frequencies of Rossby modes. Methods. A first-order perturbation theory approach is used to obtain an expression for the expected shift in the mode frequencies due to perturbations in the internal rotation rate. Results. Using the time-varying rotation from helioseismic
HD 50138 presents the B[e] phenomenon, but its nature is not clear yet. This star is known to present spectral variations, which have been associated with outbursts and shell phases. We analyze the line profile variability of HD 50138 and its possibl e origin, which provide possible hints to its evolutionary stage, so far said to be close to the end of (or slightly beyond) the main sequence. New high-resolution spectra of HD 50138 obtained with the HERMES spectrograph over several nights (five of them consecutively) were analyzed, allowing us to confirm short-term line profile variability. Our new data show short-term variations in the photospheric lines. On the other hand, purely circumstellar lines (such as [O I] lines) do not show such rapid variability. The rotational velocity of HD 50138, V_rot = 90.3 +- 4.3 km/s, and the rotation period, P = 3.64 +- 1.16 d, were derived from the He II 4026A photospheric line. Based on the moment method, we confirm that the origin of this short-term line profile variability is not stellar spots, and it may be caused by pulsations. In addition, we show that macroturbulence may affect the profiles of photospheric lines, as is seen for B supergiants. The location of HD 50138 at the end of (or slightly beyond) the main sequence, the newly detected presence of line profile variability resembling pulsating stars, and macroturbulence make this star a fascinating object.
We present results of a search for identification of modes responsible for the six most significant frequency peaks detected in the rapidly rotating SPB star $mu$ Eridani. All published and some unpublished photometric data are used in our new analys is. The mode identification is carried out with the method developed by Daszynska-Daszkiewicz et al. employing the phases and amplitudes from multi-band photometric data and relying on the traditional approximation for the treatment of oscillations in rotating stars. Models consistent with the observed mean parameters are considered. For the five frequency peaks, the candidates for the identifications are searched amongst unstable modes. In the case of the third frequency, which is an exact multiple of the orbital frequency, this condition is relaxed. The systematic search is continued up to a harmonic degree $ell =6$. Determination of the angular numbers, $(ell,m)$, is done simultaneously with the rotation rate, $V_{rm rot}$, and the inclination angle, $i$, constrained by the spectroscopic data on the projected rotational velocity, $V_{rm rot}sin i$, which is assumed constant. All the peaks may be accounted for with g-modes of high radial orders and the degrees $ellle 6$. There are differences in some identifications between the models. For the two lowest--amplitude peaks the identifications are not unique. Nonetheless, the equatorial velocity is constrained to a narrow range of (135, 140) km/s. Our work presents the first application of the photometric method of mode identification in the framework of the traditional approximation and we believe that it opens a new promising direction in studies of SPB stars.
