FeGa$_3$ is an unusual intermetallic semiconductor that presents intriguing magnetic responses to the tuning of its electronic properties. When doped with Ge, the system evolves from diamagnetic to paramagnetic to ferromagnetic ground states that are not well understood. In this work, we have performed a joint theoretical and experimental study of FeGa$_{3-x}$Ge$_x$ using Density Functional Theory and magnetic susceptibility measurements. For low Ge concentrations we observe the formation of localized moments on some Fe atoms and, as the dopant concentration increases, a more delocalized magnetic behavior emerges. The magnetic configuration strongly depends on the dopant distribution, leading even to the appearance of antiferromagnetic interactions in certain configurations.

We introduce an integrability-based method enabling the study of semiconductor quantum dot models incorporating both the full hyperfine interaction as well as a mean-field treatment of dipole-dipole interactions in the nuclear spin bath. By performin g free induction decay and spin echo simulations we characterize the combined effect of both types of interactions on the decoherence of the electron spin, for external fields ranging from low to high values. We show that for spin echo simulations the hyperfine interaction is the dominant source of decoherence at short times for low fields, and competes with the dipole-dipole interactions at longer times. On the contrary, at high fields the main source of decay is due to the dipole-dipole interactions. In the latter regime an asymmetry in the echo is observed. Furthermore, the non-decaying fraction previously observed for zero field free induction decay simulations in quantum dots with only hyperfine interactions, is destroyed for longer times by the mean-field treatment of the dipolar interactions.
Magnetic ground state of Rh-doped Kondo semiconductor CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ [Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$] is investigated by muon-spin relaxation method. Muon-spin precession with two frequencies is observed in the $x$ = 0 sample, while only one fr equency is present in the $x$ = 0.05 and 0.1 samples, which is attributed to the broad static field distribution at the muon site. The internal field at the muon site is enhanced from about 180 G in $x$ = 0 sample to about 800 G in the Rh-doped samples, supporting the spin-flop transition as suggested by macroscopic measurements, and the boundary of different magnetic ground states is identified around $x$ = 0.03. The drastic change of magnetic ground state by a small amount of Rh-doping (3%) indicates that the magnetic structure in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is not robust and can be easily tuned by external perturbations such as electron doping. The anomalous temperature dependence of internal field in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is suggested to be attributed to the hyperfine interaction between muons and conduction electrons.
Magnetization and heat capacity measurements of ternary rare earth intermetallic compound GdNiAl3 demonstrate para to ferromagnetic transition at Tc=165.5K. In addition multiple short range magnetic transitions observed below Tc are suggestive of com peting interactions in this compound. As a result of this a weak Griffiths phase type behaviour is observed in the paramagnetic region. This complex behaviour is rather supported by the random orientation of Ni centered tricapped trigonal prisms with additional Al atoms in the structure. Heat capacity and resistivity data display an interesting peak at 72 K, which is highly unaffected by magnetic fields up to 90KOe.

CeNi9Ge4 exhibits outstanding heavy fermion features with remarkable non-Fermi- liquid behavior which is mainly driven by single-ion effects. The substitution of Ni by Cu causes a reduction of both, the RKKY coupling and Kondo interaction, coming alo ng with a dramatic change of the crystal field (CF) splitting. Thereby a quasi-quartet ground state observed in CeNi9Ge4 reduces to a two-fold degenerate one in CeNi8CuGe4. This leads to a modiffcation of the effective spin degeneracy of the Kondo lattice ground state and to the appearance of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. To obtain a better understanding of consequences resulting from a reduction of the effective spin degeneracy, we stepwise replaced Ni by Co. Thereby an increase of the Kondo and RKKY interactions through the reduction of the effective d-electron count is expected. Accordingly, a paramagnetic Fermi liquid ground state should arise. Our experimental studies, however, reveal AFM order already for small Co concentrations, which becomes even more pronounced with increasing Co content x. Thereby the modiffcation of the effective spin degeneracy seems to play a crucial role in this system.
We have studied polycrystalline Yb4LiGe4, a ternary variant of the R5T4 family of layered compounds characterized by a very strong coupling between the magnetic and crystallographic degrees of freedom. The system is mixed valent, with non-magnetic Yb 2+ and magnetic Yb3+ present, and is characterized by coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. We present measurements of resistivity, AC-susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation (muSR), below 1 K. The low temperature measurements suggest a transition to a mesoscopically inhomogeneous magnetically ordered state below 2 K characterized by fluctuations well below the ordering temperature. This unusual state is believed to result from the enhanced two-dimensionality produced by Li substitution and frustration effects inherent in the Yb sub-lattice geometry.
