We experimentally investigate spin-orbit torques and spin pumping in NiFe/Pt bilayers with direct and interrupted interfaces. The damping-like and field-like torques are simultaneously measured with spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance tuned by a dc bias current, whereas spin pumping is measured electrically through the inverse spin Hall effect using a microwave cavity. Insertion of an atomically thin Cu dusting layer at the interface reduces the damping-like torque, field-like torque, and spin pumping by nearly the same factor of ~1.4. This finding confirms that the observed spin-orbit torques predominantly arise from diffusive transport of spin current generated by the spin Hall effect. We also find that spin-current scattering at the NiFe/Pt interface contributes to additional enhancement in magnetization damping that is distinct from spin pumping.

We conducted a systematic angular dependence study of nonlinear magnetoresistance in NiFe/Pt bilayers at variable temperature and field using the Wheatstone bridge method. We successfully disentangled magnon magnetoresistance from other types of magn etoresistances based on their different temperature and field dependences. Both the spin Hall/anisotropic and magnon magnetoresistances contain sine phi and sine 3 phi components with phi the angle between current and magnetization, but they exhibit different field and temperature dependence. The competition between different types of magnetoresistances leads to a sign reversal of sine 3 phi component at a specific magnetic field, which was not reported previously. The phenomenological model developed is able to account for the experimental results for both NiFe/Pt and NiFe/Ta samples with different layer thicknesses. Our results demonstrate the importance of disentangling different types of magnetoresistances when characterizing the charge-spin interconversion process in magnetic heterostructures.
Dynamic properties of NiFe thin films on PMN-PT piezoelectric substrate are investigated using the spin-diode method. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of microstrips with varying width are measured as a function of magnetic field and frequency. The FMR frequency is shown to depend on the electric field applied across the substrate, which induces strain in the NiFe layer. Electric field tunability of up to 100 MHz per 1 kV/cm is achieved. An analytical model based on total energy minimization and the LLG equation, with magnetostriction effect taken into account, is developed to explain the measured dynamics. Based on this model, conditions for strong electric-field tunable spin diode FMR in patterned NiFe/PMN-PT structures are derived.
We present a comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of voltage-controlled standing spin waves resonance (SSWR) in PMN-PT/NiFe multiferroic heterostructures patterned into microstrips. A spin-diode technique was used to observe ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode and SSWR in NiFe strip mechanically coupled with a piezoelectric substrate. Application of an electric field to a PMNPT creates a strain in permalloy and thus shifts the FMR and SSWR fields due to the magnetostriction effect. The experimental results are compared with micromagnetic simulations and a good agreement between them is found for dynamics of FMR and SSWR with and without electric field. Moreover, micromagnetic simulations enable us to discuss the amplitude and phase spatial distributions of FMR and SSWR modes, which are not directly observable by means of spin diode detection technique.
We measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in a unique model system of all-epitaxial ferrite/Pt bilayers to gain insights into charge-spin interconversion in Pt. With negligible electronic conduction in the insulating ferrite, the crystalline Pt film acts as the sole source of charge-to-spin conversion. A small field-like SOT independent of Pt thickness suggests a weak Rashba-Edelstein effect at the ferrite/Pt interface. By contrast, we observe a sizable damping-like SOT that depends on the Pt thickness, from which we deduce the dominance of an extrinsic spin-Hall effect (skew scattering) and Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation in the crystalline Pt film. Furthermore, our results point to a large internal spin-Hall ratio of $approx$0.8 in epitaxial Pt. Our experimental work takes an essential step towards understanding the mechanisms of charge-spin interconversion and SOTs in Pt-based heterostructures, which are crucial for power-efficient spintronic devices.
Spin-valve is a microelectronic device in which high and low resistance states are realized by utilizing both charge and spin of carriers. Spin-valve structures used in modern hard drive read-heads and magnetic random access memories comprise two fer romagnetic (FM) electrodes whose relative magnetization orientations can be switched between parallel and antiparallel configurations, yielding the desired giant or tunneling magnetoresistance effect. In this paper we demonstrate >100$% spin-valve-like signal in a NiFe/IrMn/MgO/Pt stack with an antiferromagnet (AFM) on one side and a non-magnetic metal on the other side of the tunnel barrier. FM moments in NiFe are reversed by external fields <50mT and the exchange-spring effect of NiFe on IrMn induces rotation of AFM moments in IrMn which is detected by the measured tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR). Our work demonstrates a spintronic element whose transport characteristics are governed by an AFM. It demonstrates that sensitivity to low magnetic fields can be combined with large, spin-orbit coupling induced magneto-transport anisotropy using a single magnetic electrode. The AFM-TAMR provides means to study magnetic characteristics of AFM films by an electronic transport measurement.
