The effect of $Z_3$ symmetry on the general Two Higgs Doublet Model is explored. Of particular interest is the question of what can a $Z_3$ symmetry do beyond the usual case with $Z_2$. There are two independent scenarios that give some interesting results: first, by giving non-trivial charges to the Standard Model fermions, it is possible to use the $Z_3$ symmetry of the scalar potential to generate potentially useful Yukawa textures. This is not possible with $Z_2$. A series of possibilities is presented where their viability is addressed and a specific example in the quark sector is given for concreteness. The second venue of interest is in the area of inert doublets. It is shown that by considering the Standard Model plus two additional inert doublet scalars, i.e. a Dark Two Higgs Doublet Model, together with $Z_3$, a scenario can be obtained that differs from the $Z_2$ case. Some general comments are presented on the potentially interesting phenomenology of such model.

We study Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM) where Abelian symmetries have been introduced, leading to a drastic reduction in the number of free parameters in the 2HDM. Our analysis is inspired in BGL models, where, as the result of a symmetry of the Lag rangian, there are tree-level scalar mediated Flavour-Changing-Neutral-Currents, with the flavour structure depending only on the CKM matrix. A systematic analysis is done on the various possible schemes, which are classified in different classes, depending on the way the extra symmetries constrain the matrices of couplings defining the flavour structure of the scalar mediated neutral currents. All the resulting flavour textures of the Yukawa couplings are stable under renormalisation since they result from symmetries imposed at the Lagrangian level. We also present a brief phenomenological analysis of the most salient features of each class of symmetry constrained 2HDM.
Models with two or more scalar doublets with discrete or global symmetries can have vacua with vanishing vacuum expectation values in the bases where symmetries are imposed. If a suitable symmetry stabilises such vacua, these models may lead to inter esting dark matter candidates, provided that the symmetry prevents couplings among the dark matter candidates and the fermions. We analyse three-Higgs-doublet models with an underlying $S_3$ symmetry. These models have many distinct vacua with one or two vanishing vacuum expectation values which can be stabilised by a remnant of the $S_3$ symmetry which survived spontaneous symmetry breaking. We discuss all possible vacua in the context of $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet models, allowing also for softly broken $S_3$, and explore one of the vacuum configurations in detail. In the case we explore, only one of the three Higgs doublets is inert. The other two are active, and therefore the active sector, in many aspects, behaves like a two-Higgs-doublet model. The way the fermions couple to the scalar sector is constrained by the $S_3$ symmetry and is such that the flavour structure of the model is solely governed by the $V_text{CKM}$ matrix which, in our framework, is not constrained by the $S_3$ symmetry. This is a key requirement for models with minimal flavour violation. In our model there is no CP violation in the scalar sector. We study this model in detail giving the masses and couplings and identifying the range of parameters that are compatible with theoretical and experimental constraints, both from accelerator physics and from astrophysics.
The Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with spontaneously broken $Z_2$ symmetry predicts a production of domain walls at the electroweak scale. We derive cosmological constraints on model parameters for both Type-I and Type-II 2HDMs from the requirement that domain walls do not dominate the Universe by the present day. For Type-I 2HDMs, we deduce the lower bound on the key parameter $tanbeta > 10^5$ for a wide range of Higgs-boson masses $sim$ 100 GeV or greater close to the Standard Model alignment limit. In addition, we perform numerical simulations of the 2HDM with an approximate as well as an exact $Z_2$ symmetry but biased initial conditions. In both cases, we find that domain wall networks are unstable and, hence, do not survive at late times. The domain walls experience an exponential suppression of scaling in these models which can help ameliorate the stringent constraints found in the case of an exact discrete symmetry. For a 2HDM with softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry, we relate the size of this exponential suppression to the soft-breaking bilinear parameter $m_{12}$ allowing limits to be placed on this parameter of order $mu$eV, such that domain wall domination can be avoided. In particular, for Type-II 2HDMs, we obtain a corresponding lower limit on the CP-odd phase $theta$ generated by QCD instantons, $theta stackrel{>}{{}_sim} 10^{-11}/(sinbeta cosbeta)$, which is in some tension with the upper limit of $theta stackrel{<}{{}_sim} 10^{-11}$--$10^{-10}$, as derived from the non-observation of a non-zero neutron electric dipole moment. For a $Z_2$-symmetric 2HDM with biased initial conditions, we are able to relate the size of the exponential suppression to a biasing parameter $varepsilon$ so as to avoid domain wall domination.
The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. An exact symmetry implies CP conservation. We show that soft breaking of the symmetry can lead to spontaneous CP violation (CPV) in three of the classes.
The stringent constraints from the direct searches for exotic scalars at the LHC as well as indirect bounds from flavor physics measurements have imposed severe restrictions on the parameter space of new physics models featuring extended Higgs sector s. In the Type-II 2HDM, this implies a lower bound on the charged Higgs masses of $cal O$(600 GeV). In this work we analyze the phenomenology of a Z3HDM in the alignment limit focusing on the impact of flavor physics constraints on its parameter space. We show that the couplings of the two charged Higgs bosons in this model feature an additional suppression factor compared to Type-II 2HDM. This gives rise to a significant relaxation of the flavor physics constraints in this model, allowing the charged Higgs masses to be as low as $cal O$(200 GeV). We also consider the constraints coming from precision electroweak observables and the observed diphoton decay rate of the 125 GeV Higgs boson at the LHC. The bounds coming from the direct searches of nonstandard Higgs bosons at the LHC, particularly those from resonance searches in the ditau channel, prove to be very effective in constraining this scenario further.
