In this work we study wave propagation in dissipative relativistic fluids described by a simplified set of the 2nd order viscous conformal hydrodynamic equations. Small amplitude waves are studied within the linearization approximation while waves with large amplitude are investigated using the reductive perturbation method. Our results indicate the presence of a soliton-like wave solution in 2nd order conformal hydrodynamics despite the presence of dissipation and relaxation effects.

We derive the equations of second order dissipative fluid dynamics from the relativistic Boltzmann equation following the method of W. Israel and J. M. Stewart. We present a frame independent calculation of all first- and second-order terms and their coefficients using a linearised collision integral. Therefore, we restore all terms that were previously neglected in the original papers of W. Israel and J. M. Stewart.
We study nonlinear waves in a nonrelativistic ideal and cold quark gluon plasma immersed in a strong uniform magnetic field. In the context of nonrelativistic hydrodynamics with an external magnetic field we derive a nonlinear wave equation for baryo n density perturbations, which can be written as a reduced Ostrovsky equation. We find analytical solutions and identify the effects of the magnetic field.

We calculate the second order viscous correction to the kinetic distribution, $delta f_{(2)}$, and use this result in a hydrodynamic simulation of heavy ion collisions to determine the complete second order correction to the harmonic spectrum, $v_n$. At leading order in a conformal fluid, the first viscous correction is determined by one scalar function, $chi_{0p}$. One moment of this scalar function is constrained by the shear viscosity. At second order in a conformal fluid, we find that $delta f(p)$ can be characterized by two scalar functions of momentum, $chi_{1p}$ and $chi_{2p}$. The momentum dependence of these functions is largely determined by the kinematics of the streaming operator. Again, one moment of these functions is constrained by the parameters of second order hydrodynamics, $tau_pi$ and $lambda_1$. The effect of $delta f_{(2)}$ on the integrated flow is small (up to $v_4$), but is quite important for the higher harmonics at modestly-large $p_T$. Generally, $delta f_{(2)}$ increases the value of $v_n$ at a given $p_T$, and is most important in small systems.

Holographic entanglement entropy and the first law of thermodynamics are believed to decode the gravity theory in the bulk. In particular, assuming the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT)cite{ryu-takayanagi} formula holds for ball-shaped regions on the boundary ar ound CFT vacuum states impliescite{Nonlinear-Faulkner} a bulk gravity theory equivalent to Einstein gravity through second-order perturbations. In this paper, we show that the same assumptions can also give rise to second-order Lovelock gravity. Specifically, we generalize the procedure in cite{Nonlinear-Faulkner} to show that the arguments there also hold for Lovelock gravity by proving through second-order perturbation theory, the entropy calculated using the Wald formulacite{Wald_noether} in Lovelock also obeys an area law (at least up to second order). Since the equations for second-order perturbations of Lovelock gravity are different in general from the second-order perturbation of the Einstein-Hilbert action, our work shows that the holographic area law cannot determine a unique bulk theory even for second-order perturbations assuming only RT on ball-shaped regions. It is anticipated that RT on all subregions is expected to encode the full non-linear Einstein equations on asymptotically AdS spacetimes.
We compute the hydrodynamic relaxation times $tau_pi$ and $tau_j$ for hot QCD at next-to-leading order in the coupling with kinetic theory. We show that certain dimensionless ratios of second-order to first-order transport coefficients obey bounds wh ich apply whenever a kinetic theory description is possible; the computed values lie somewhat above these bounds. Strongly coupled theories with holographic duals strongly violate these bounds, highlighting their distance from a quasiparticle description.
