Node failures are inevitable in distributed storage systems (DSS). To enable efficient repair when faced with such failures, two main techniques are known: Regenerating codes, i.e., codes that minimize the total repair bandwidth; and codes with locality, which minimize the number of nodes participating in the repair process. This paper focuses on regenerating codes with locality, using pre-coding based on Gabidulin codes, and presents constructions that utilize minimum bandwidth regenerating (MBR) local codes. The constructions achieve maximum resilience (i.e., optimal minimum distance) and have maximum capacity (i.e., maximum rate). Finally, the same pre-coding mechanism can be combined with a subclass of fractional-repetition codes to enable maximum resilience and repair-by-transfer simultaneously.

A new type of spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes motivated by practical storage applications is presented. SC-LDPCL codes (suffix L stands for locality) can be decoded locally at the level of sub-blocks that are much smaller t han the full code block, thus offering flexible access to the coded information alongside the strong reliability of the global full-block decoding. Toward that, we propose constructions of SC-LDPCL codes that allow controlling the trade-off between local and global correction performance. In addition to local and global decoding, the paper develops a density-evolution analysis for a decoding mode we call semi-global decoding, in which the decoder has access to the requested sub-block plus a prescribed number of sub-blocks around it. SC-LDPCL codes are also studied under a channel model with variability across sub-blocks, for which decoding-performance lower bounds are derived.

In this paper motivated from subspace coding we introduce subspace-metric and subset-metric codes. These are coordinate-position independent pseudometrics and suitable for the folded codes introduced by Guruswami and Rudra. The half-Singleton upper b ounds for linear subspace-metric and subset-metric codes are proved. Subspace distances and subset distances of codes are natural lower bounds for insdel distances of codes, and then can be used to lower bound the insertion-deletion error-correcting capabilities of codes. The problem to construct efficient insertion-deletion error-correcting codes is notorious difficult and has attracted a long-time continuous efforts. The recent breakthrough is the algorithmic construction of near-Singleton optimal rate-distance tradeoff insertion-deletion code families by B. Haeupler and A. Shahrasbi in 2017 from their synchronization string technique. However most nice codes in these recent results are not explicit though many of them can be constructed by highly efficient algorithms. Our subspace-metric and subset-metric codes can be used to construct systemic explicit well-structured insertion-deletion codes. We present some near-optimal subspace-metric and subset-metric codes from known constant dimension subspace codes. By analysing the subset distances of folded codes from evaluation codes of linear mappings, we prove that they have high subset distances and then are explicit good insertion-deletion codes
Streaming codes are a class of packet-level erasure codes that ensure packet recovery over a sliding window channel which allows either a burst erasure of size $b$ or $a$ random erasures within any window of size $(tau+1)$ time units, under a strict decoding-delay constraint $tau$. The field size over which streaming codes are constructed is an important factor determining the complexity of implementation. The best known explicit rate-optimal streaming code requires a field size of $q^2$ where $q ge tau+b-a$ is a prime power. In this work, we present an explicit rate-optimal streaming code, for all possible ${a,b,tau}$ parameters, over a field of size $q^2$ for prime power $q ge tau$. This is the smallest-known field size of a general explicit rate-optimal construction that covers all ${a,b,tau}$ parameter sets. We achieve this by modifying the non-explicit code construction due to Krishnan et al. to make it explicit, without change in field size.
SC-LDPC codes with sub-block locality can be decoded locally at the level of sub-blocks that are much smaller than the full code block, thus providing fast access to the coded information. The same code can also be decoded globally using the entire c ode block, for increased data reliability. In this paper, we pursue the analysis and design of such codes from both finite-length and asymptotic lenses. This mixed approach has rarely been applied in designing SC codes, but it is beneficial for optimizing code graphs for local and global performance simultaneously. Our proposed framework consists of two steps: 1) designing the local code for both threshold and cycle counts, and 2) designing the coupling of local codes for best cycle count in the global design.
Locally recoverable codes were introduced by Gopalan et al. in 2012, and in the same year Prakash et al. introduced the concept of codes with locality, which are a type of locally recoverable codes. In this work we introduce a new family of codes wit h locality, which are subcodes of a certain family of evaluation codes. We determine the dimension of these codes, and also bounds for the minimum distance. We present the true values of the minimum distance in special cases, and also show that elements of this family are optimal codes, as defined by Prakash et al.
