Using the deepest and most complete observations of distant galaxies, we investigate the progenitors of present-day large spirals. Observations include spatially-resolved kinematics, detailed morphologies and photometry from UV to mid-IR. Six billions years ago, half of the present-day spirals were starbursts experiencing major mergers, evidenced by their anomalous kinematics and morphologies. They are consequently modeled using hydrodynamics models of mergers and it perfectly matches with merger rate predictions by state-of-the-art-{Lambda}CDM semi-empirical models. Furthermore imprints in the halo of local galaxies such as M31 or NGC5907 are likely caused by major merger relics. This suggests that the hierarchical scenario has played a major role in shaping the massive galaxies of the Hubble sequence. Linking galaxy properties at different epochs is the best way to fully understand galaxy formation processes and we have tested such a link through generated series of simulations of gas-rich mergers. Mergers have expelled material in galactic haloes and beyond, possibly explaining 60% of the missing baryons in Milky-Way (MW) mass galaxies. A past major merger in M31 might affect drastically our understanding of Local Group galaxies, including MW dwarves. We also propose future directions to observationally constrain the necessary ingredients in galaxy simulations.

Stars form with a complex and highly structured distribution. For a smooth star cluster to form from these initial conditions, the star cluster must erase this substructure. We study how substructure is removed using N-body simulations that realistic ally handle two-body relaxation. In contrast to previous studies, we find that hierarchical cluster formation occurs chiefly as a result of scattering of stars out of clumps, and not through clump merging. Two-body relaxation, in particular within the body of a clump, can significantly increase the rate at which substructure is erased beyond that of clump-merging alone. Hence the relaxation time of individual clumps is a key parameter controlling the rate at which smooth, spherical star clusters can form. The initial virial ratio of the clumps is an additional key parameter controlling the formation rate of a cluster. Reducing the initial virial ratio causes a star cluster to lose its substructure more rapidly.
We have compared the TeV gamma-rays with the new 12CO J=2-1 data toward HESS J1745-303 in the Galactic center and confirmed that the molecular gas MG358.9-0.5 toward (l, b)=(358.9, -0.5 at VLSR=-100-0 km s-1 shows a reasonable positional agreement wi th the primary peak (northern part) of the gamma-ray source. For the southern part of HESS J1745-303, we see no CO counterpart, whereas the HI gas in the Parkes 21 cm HI dataset shows a possible counterpart to the gamma-ray source. This HI gas may be optically thick as supported by the HI line shape similar to the optically thick 12CO. We estimate the total mass of interstellar protons including both the molecular and atomic gas to be 2x10^6 Mo and the cosmic-ray proton energy to be 6x10^{48} ergs in the hadronic scenario. We discuss possible origins of the cosmic-ray protons including the nearby SNR G359.1-0.5. The SNR may be able to explain the northern gamma-ray source but the southern source seems to be too far to be energized by the SNR. As an alternative, we argue that the second-order Fermi acceleration in the inter-clump space surrounded by randomly moving high-velocity clumps may offer a possible mechanism to accelerate protons. The large turbulent motion with velocity dispersion of ~15 km s-1 has energy density two orders of magnitude higher than in the solar vicinity and is viable as the energy source.

(abridged) We study the consequence of star formation (SF) in an self-gravity dominated accretion disk in quasars. The warm skins of the SF disk are governed by the radiation from the inner part of the accretion disk to form Compton atmosphere (CAS). The CAS are undergoing four phases to form broad line regions. Phase I is the duration of pure accumulation supplied by the SF disk. During phase II clouds begin to form due to line cooling and sink to the SF disk. Phase III is a period of preventing clouds from sinking to the SF disk through dynamic interaction between clouds and the CAS. Finally, phase IV is an inevitable collapse of the entire CAS through line cooling. This CAS evolution drives the episodic appearance of BLRs. Geometry and dynamics of BLRs can be self-consistently derived from the thermal instability of the CAS during phases II and III by linear analysis. The metallicity gradient of SF disk gives rise to different properties of clouds from outer to inner part of BLRs. We find that clouds have column density N_H < 10^22cm^{-2} in the metal-rich regions whereas they have N_H > 10^22 cm^{-2} in the metal-poor regions. The metal-rich clouds compose the high ionization line (HIL) regions whereas the metal-poor clouds are in low ionization line (LIL) regions. Metal-rich clouds in HIL regions will be blown away by radiation pressure, forming the observed outflows. The LIL regions are episodic due to the mass cycle of clouds with the CAS in response to continuous injection by the SF disk, giving rise to different types of AGNs. Based on SDSS quasar spectra, we identify a spectral sequence in light of emission line equivalent width from Phase I to IV. A key phase in the episodic appearance of the BLRs is bright type II AGNs with no or only weak BLRs. We discuss observational implications and tests of the theoretical predictions of this model.
We analyze the physical properties and infall rates of the circum-galactic gas around disks obtained in multi-resolved, cosmological, AMR simulations. At intermediate and low redshifts, disks are embedded into an extended, hot, tenuous corona that co ntributes largely in fueling the disk with non-enriched gas whereas the accretion of enriched gas from tidal streams occurs throughout episodic events. We derive an infall rate close to the disk of the same value as the one of the star formation rate in the disk and its temporal evolution as a function of galacto-centric radius nicely shows that the growth of galactic disks proceeds according to an inside-out formation scenario.

We discuss how the effective radius Phi(Re) function (ERF) recently worked out by Bernardi et al. (2009) represents a new testbed to improve the current understanding of Semi-analytic Models of Galaxy formation. In particular, we here show that a det ailed hierarchical model of structure formation can broadly reproduce the correct peak in the size distribution of local early-type galaxies, although it significantly overpredicts the number of very compact and very large galaxies. This in turn is reflected in the predicted size-mass relation, much flatter than the observed one, due to too large (~3 kpc) low-mass galaxies (<10^11 msun), and to a non-negligible fraction of compact (< 0.5-1 kpc) and massive galaxies (> 10^11 msun). We also find that the latter discrepancy is smaller than previously claimed, and limited to only ultracompact (Re < 0.5 kpc) galaxies when considering elliptical-dominated samples. We explore several causes behind these effects. We conclude that the former problem might be linked to the initial conditions, given that large and low-mass galaxies are present at all epochs in the model. The survival of compact and massive galaxies might instead be linked to their very old ages and peculiar merger histories. Overall, knowledge of the galactic stellar mass {em and} size distributions allows a better understanding of where and how to improve models.
