Observational constraints on the average radial distribution profile of AGN in distant galaxy clusters can provide important clues on the triggering mechanisms of AGN activity in dense environments and are essential for a completeness evaluation of cluster selection techniques in the X-ray and mm-wavebands. The aim of this work is a statistical study with XMM-Newton of the presence and distribution of X-ray AGN in the large-scale structure environments of 22 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.9 < z lesssim 1.6 compiled by the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP). To this end, the X-ray point source lists from detections in the soft-band (0.35-2.4 keV) and full-band (0.3-7.5 keV) were stacked in cluster-centric coordinates and compared to average background number counts extracted from three independent control fields in the same observations. A significant full-band (soft-band) excess of sim78 (67) X-ray point sources is found in the cluster fields within an angular distance of 8 (4Mpc) at a statistical confidence level of 4.0 sigma (4.2 sigma), corresponding to an average number of detected excess AGN per cluster environment of 3.5pm0.9 (3.0pm0.7). The data point towards a rising radial profile in the cluster region (r<1Mpc) of predominantly low-luminosity AGN with an average detected excess of about one point source per system, with a tentative preferred occurrence along the main cluster elongation axis. A second statistically significant overdensity of brighter soft-band detected AGN is found at cluster-centric distances of 4-6 (2-3Mpc), corresponding to about three times the average cluster radius R200 of the systems. If confirmed, these results would support the idea of two different physical triggering mechanisms of X-ray AGN activity in dependence of the radially changing large-scale structure environment of the distant clusters.

We present the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed X-ray luminous high-redshift galaxy clusters to date comprising 22 systems in the range 0.9<z<sim1.6 as part of the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP). All systems were initially sel ected as extended X-ray sources over 76.1 deg^2 of non-contiguous deep archival XMM-Newton coverage. We test and calibrate the most promising two-band redshift estimation techniques based on the R-z and z-H colors for efficient distant cluster identifications and find a good redshift accuracy performance of the z-H color out to at least zsim1.5, while the redshift evolution of the R-z color leads to increasingly large uncertainties at z>sim0.9. We present first details of two newly identified clusters, XDCP J0338.5+0029 at z=0.916 and XDCP J0027.2+1714 at z=0.959, and investigate the Xray properties of SpARCS J003550-431224 at z=1.335, which shows evidence for ongoing major merger activity along the line-of-sight. We provide X-ray properties and luminosity-based total mass estimates for the full sample, which has a median system mass of M200simeq2times10^14Modot. In contrast to local clusters, the z>0.9 systems do mostly not harbor central dominant galaxies coincident with the X-ray centroid position, but rather exhibit significant BCG offsets from the X-ray center with a median value of about 50 kpc in projection and a smaller median luminosity gap to the second-ranked galaxy of sim0.3mag. We estimate a fraction of cluster-associated NVSS 1.4GHz radio sources of about 30%, preferentially located within 1 from the X-ray center. The galaxy populations in z>sim1.5 cluster environments show first evidence for drastic changes on the high-mass end of galaxies and signs for a gradual disappearance of a well-defined cluster red-sequence as strong star formation activity is observed in an increasing fraction of massive galaxies down to the densest core regions.

We present a study of X-ray AGN overdensities in 16 Abell clusters, within the redshift range 0.073<z<0.279, in order to investigate the effect of the hot inter-cluster environment on the triggering of the AGN phenomenon. The X-ray AGN overdensities, with respect to the field expectations, were estimated for sources with L_x>= 10^{42} erg s^{-1} (at the redshift of the clusters) and within an area of 1 h^{-1}_{72} Mpc radius (excluding the core). To investigate the presence or not of a true enhancement of luminous X-ray AGN in the cluster area, we also derived the corresponding optical galaxy overdensities, using a suitable range of $r$-band magnitudes. We always find the latter to be significantly higher (and only in two cases roughly equal) with respect to the corresponding X-ray overdensities. Over the whole cluster sample, the mean X-ray point-source overdensity is a factor of ~4 less than that corresponding to bright optical galaxies, a difference which is significant at a >0.995 level, as indicated by an appropriate t-student test. We conclude that the triggering of luminous X-ray AGN in rich clusters is strongly suppressed. Furthermore, searching for optical SDSS counterparts of all the X-ray sources, associated with our clusters, we found that about half appear to be background QSOs, while others are background and foreground AGN or stars. The true overdensity of X-ray point sources, associated to the clusters, is therefore even smaller than what our statistical approach revealed.
We report the discovery of a compact supercluster structure at z=0.9. The structure comprises three optically-selected clusters, all of which are detected in X-rays and spectroscopically confirmed to lie at the same redshift. The Chandra X-ray temper atures imply individual masses of ~5x10^14 Msun. The X-ray masses are consistent with those inferred from optical--X-ray scaling relations established at lower redshift. A strongly-lensed z~4 Lyman break galaxy behind one of the clusters allows a strong-lensing mass to be estimated for this cluster, which is in good agreement with the X-ray measurement. Optical spectroscopy of this cluster gives a dynamical mass in good agreement with the other independent mass estimates. The three components of the RCS2319+00 supercluster are separated from their nearest neighbor by a mere <3 Mpc in the plane of the sky and likely <10 Mpc along the line-of-sight, and we interpret this structure as the high-redshift antecedent of massive (~10^15 Msun) z~0.5 clusters such as MS0451.5-0305.
Galaxy clusters are the most recent products of hierarchical accretion over cosmological scales. The gas accreted from the cosmic field is thermalized inside the cluster halo. Gas entropy and pressure are expected to have a self-similar behaviour wit h their radial distribution following a power law and a generalized Navarro-Frenk-White profile, respectively. This has been shown also in many different hydrodynamical simulations. We derive the spatially-resolved thermodynamical properties of 47 X-ray galaxy clusters observed with Chandra in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 1.2, the largest sample investigated so far in this redshift range with X-rays spectroscopy, with a particular care in reconstructing the gas entropy and pressure radial profiles. We search for deviation from the self-similar behaviour and look for possible evolution with redshift. The entropy and pressure profiles lie very close to the baseline prediction from gravitational structure formation. We show that these profiles deviate from the baseline prediction as function of redshift, in particular at z > 0.75, where, in the central regions, we observe higher values of the entropy (by a factor of 2.2) and systematically lower estimates (by a factor of 2.5) of the pressure. The effective polytropic index, which retains informations about the thermal distribution of the gas, shows a slight linear positive evolution with the redshift and the concentration of the dark matter distribution. A prevalence of non-cool-core, disturbed systems, as we observe at higher redshifts, can explain such behaviours.

The thermal, chemical, and kinematic properties of the potentially multi-phase circum/inter-galactic medium at the virial radii of galaxy clusters remain largely uncertain. We present an X-ray study of Abell 2246 and GMBCG J255.34805+64.23661 (z=0.23 and 0.45), two foreground clusters of the UV-bright QSO HS 1700+6416, based on 240 ks Chandra/ACIS-I observations. We detect enhanced diffuse X-ray emission to the projected distances beyond r_{200} radii of these two clusters. The large-scale X-ray emission is consistent with being azimuthally symmetric at the projected radii of the QSO (0.36 and 0.8 times the radii of the two clusters). Assuming a spherical symmetry, we obtain the de-projected temperature and density profiles of the X-ray-emitting gas. Excluding the cool cores that are detected, we find that the mean temperature of the hot gas is about 4.0 keV for Abell 2246 and 5.5 keV for GMBCG J255.34805+64.23661, although there are indications for temperature drop at large radii. From these results, we can estimate the density and pressure distributions of the hot gas along the QSO sightline. We further infer the radial entropy profile of Abell 2246 and compare it with the one expected from purely gravitational hierarchical structure formation. This comparison shows that the ICM in the outer region of the clusters is likely in a clumpy and multi-phased state. These results, together with the upcoming HST/COS observations of the QSO sightline, will enable a comprehensive investigation of the multi-phase medium associated with the clusters.
