The linear term proportional to $|N-Z|$ in the nuclear symmetry energy (Wigner energy)is obtained in a model that uses isovector pairing on single particle levels from a deformed potential combined with a $vec T^2$ interaction. The pairing correlations are calculated by numerical diagonalization of the pairing Hamiltonian acting on the six or seven levels nearest the $N=Z$ Fermi surface. The experimental binding energies of nuclei with $Napprox Z$ are well reproduced. The Wigner energy emerges as a consequence of restoring isospin symmetry. We have found the Wigner energy to be insensitive to the presence of moderate isoscalar pair correlations.
Neutron-proton (np-) pairing is expected to play an important role in the N Z nuclei. In general, it can have isovector and isoscalar character. The existence of isovector np-pairing is well established. On the contrary, it is still debated whether t
The onset of 1S0 proton spin-singlet pairing in neutron-star matter is studied in the framework of the BCS theory including medium polarization effects. The strong three-body coupling of the diproton pairs with the dense neutron environment and the s
The self-energy effect on the neutron-proton (np) pairing gap is investigated up to the third order within the framework of the extend Bruecker-Hartree-Fock (BHF) approach combined with the BCS theory. The self-energy up to the second-order contribut
We propose a particle number conserving formalism for the treatment of isovector-isoscalar pairing in nuclei with $N>Z$. The ground state of the pairing Hamiltonian is described by a quartet condensate to which is appended a pair condensate formed by
The long standing problem of neutron-proton pairing correlations is revisited by employing the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism with neutron-proton mixing in both the particle-hole and particle-hole channels. We compare numerical calculations perfor
