Coaxial wire measurements have provided a simple and effective way to measure the beam coupling impedance of accelerator structures for a number of years. It has been known how to measure the longitudinal and dipolar transverse impedance using one and two wires for some time. Recently the ability to measure the quadrupolar impedance of structures exhibiting top/bottom and left/right symmetry has been demonstrated. A method for measuring the beam coupling impedance of asymmetric structures using displaced single wires and two wire measurements is proposed. Simulations of the measurement system are presented with further work proposed.

Fast kicker magnets are used to inject beam into and eject beam out of the CERN accelerator rings. These kickers are generally transmission line type magnets with a rectangular shaped aperture through which the beam passes. Unless special precautions are taken the impedance of the yoke can provoke significant beam induced heating, especially for high intensities. In addition the impedance may contribute to beam instabilities. The results of longitudinal and transverse impedance measurements, for various kicker magnets, are presented and compared with analytical calculations: in addition predictions from a numerical analysis are discussed.

We present energy spread and bunch length measurements at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, as functions of current, for different ring rf voltages, and with the beam both on and off the coupling resonance. We fit the on-coupling bunch shap es to those of an impedance model consisting of a resistor and an inductor connected in series. We find that the fits are reasonably good, but that the resulting impedance is unexpectedly large.

The Laser-wire will be an essential diagnostic tool at the International Linear Collider. It uses a finely focussed laser beam to measure the transverse profile of electron bunches by detecting the Compton-scattered photons (or degraded electrons) do wnstream of where the laser beam intersects the electron beam. Such a system has been installed at the PETRA storage ring at DESY, which uses a piezo-driven mirror to scan the laser-light across the electron beam. Lat- est results of experimental data taking are presented and compared to detailed simulations using the Geant4 based program BDSIM.
The fast extraction kicker system is one of the most important accelerator components, whose inner structure will be the main source of the impedance in the RCS. It is necessary to understand the kicker impedance before its installation into the tunn el. The conventional and improved wire methods are employed for the benchmarking impedance measurement results. The simulation and measurements confirm that the window-frame ferrite geometry and the end plate are the important structures causing the coupling impedance. The total impedance of the eight modules systems is determined by the scaling law from the measurement and the impedance measurement of the kicker system is summarized.

The current noise density S of a conductor in equilibrium, the Johnson noise, is determined by its temperature T: S=4kTG with G the conductance. The samples noise temperature Tn=S/(4kG) generalizes T for a system out of equilibrium. We introduce the noise thermal impedance of a sample as the amplitude of the oscillation of Tn when heated by an oscillating power. For a macroscopic sample, it is the usual thermal impedance. We show for a diffusive wire how this (complex) frequency-dependent quantity gives access to the electron-phonon interaction time in a long wire and to the diffusion time in a shorter one, and how its real part may also give access to the electron-electron inelastic time. These times are not simply accessible from the frequency dependence of S itself.
