Here we aim to show that the ratio of the momentum spectra of $K^{+}$ at small transverse momentum measured for symmetric systems of different sizes can be such an observable.

Comparing K+ spectra at low transverse momenta for different symmetric collision systems at beam energies around 1 AGeV allows for a direct determination of both the strength of the K+ nucleus potential as well as of the K+N rescattering cross sectio n in a hadronic environment. Other little known or unknown quantities which enter the K+ dynamics, like the production cross sections of K+ mesons or the hadronic equation of state, do not spoil this signal as they cancel by using ratios of spectra. This procedure is based on transport model calculations using the Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model which describes the available data quantitatively.
Quasielastic K^+ - nucleus scattering data at q=290, 390 and 480 MeV/c are analyzed in a finite nucleus continuum random phase approximation framework, using a density-dependent particle-hole interaction. The reaction mechanism is consistently treate d according to Glauber theory, keeping up to two-step inelastic processes. A good description of the data is achieved, also providing a useful constraint on the strength of the effective particle-hole interaction in the scalar-isoscalar channel at intermediate momentum transfers. We find no evidence for the increase in the effective number of nucleons participating in the reaction which has been reported in the literature.
The $(K^-,K^+)$ $Xi^-$ production inclusive spectrum is reinvestigated in view of the very weak $Xi$-nucleus potential predicted by microscopic calculations with the SU$_6$ quark-model baryon-baryon interaction. The inclusive spectrum is evaluated by the semiclassical distorted wave (SCDW) method. The explicit comparison of the strength function with that of the Green-function method demonstrates the quantitative reliability of the SCDW approximation. It is presumed that the presently available data at the $Xi$ production threshold region does not necessarily imply the attractive strength of about 15 MeV for the $Xi$-nucleus potential in a conventional Woods-Saxon form. Instead, an almost zero potential is preferable.

Event-by-event fluctuations of the kaon to pion number ratio in nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the statistical hadron-resonance gas model (SM) for different statistical ensembles and in the Hadron-String-Dynamics (HSD) transport approa ch. We find that the HSD model can qualitatively reproduce the measured excitation function for the $K/pi$ ratio fluctuations in central Au+Au (or Pb+Pb) collisions from low SPS up to top RHIC energies. Substantial differences in the HSD and SM results are found for the fluctuations and correlations of the kaon and pion numbers. These predictions impose a challenge for future experiments.
The comparison of $K^+$ and $K^-$ spectra at low transverse momentum in light symmetric heavy ion reactions at energies around 2 AGeV allows for a direct experimental determination of the strength of the $K^+$ as well as of t he $K^-$ nucleus potenti al. Other little known or unknown input quantities like the production or rescattering cross sections of $K^+$ and $K^-$ mesons do not spoil this signal. This result, obtained by simulations of these reactio ns with the Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model, may solve the longstanding question of the behaviour of the $K^-$ in hadronic matter and especially whether a $K^-$ condensate can be formed in heavy ion collisions.
