Phonons in single crystals of PrFeAsO_{1-y} are investigated using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering and ab initio pseudopotential calculations. Extensive measurements of several samples at temperatures spanning the magnetic ordering temperature and the superconducting transition temperature show that there are some changes in phonon spectra with temperature and/or doping. We compare our measurements with several ab initio pseudopotential models (nonmagnetic tetragonal, oxygen-deficient O_{7/8} supercell, magnetic orthorhombic, and magnetic tetragonal) and find that the experimentally observed changes are much smaller than the differences between the experimental data and the calculations. Agreement is improved if magnetism is included in the calculations via the local spin density approximation, as the Fe atomic motions parallel to the ferromagnetic ordering direction are softened. However, the antiferromagnetically polarized modes remain hard, and in disagreement with the experimental data. In fact, given the increasing evidence for anisotropy in the iron pnictide materials, the phonon response is surprisingly isotropic. We consider several modifications of the ab initio calculations to improve the agreement with the experimental data. Improved agreement is found by setting the matrix to zero (clipping the bond) between nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetically aligned Fe atoms in the magnetic calculation, or by softening only the in-plane nearest-neighbor Fe-As force constant in the nonmagnetic calculation. We discuss these results in the context of other measurements, especially of phonons, for several FeAs systems. Fluctuating magnetism may be a partial explanation for the failure of the calculations, but seems incomplete in the face of the similarity of the measured phonon response in all the systems investigated here including those known to have static magnetism.

The lattice dynamics of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} (x=0, 0.1) and PrFeAsO_{1-y} (y~0.1) are investigated using inelastic x-ray scattering and ab-initio calculation. Measurements of powder samples provide an approximation to the phonon DOS, while dispersion i s measured from a single crystal of PrFeAsO_{1-y}. A model that agrees reasonably well with all of the data at room temperature is built from results of ab-initio calculations by softening the strength of the Fe-As bond by 30%.
We present a phenomenological theory for the ferromagnetic transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility at high temperatures, and the structural distortion in the La$_{1-y}$(Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$)$_{y}$MnO$_{3}$ system. We construct a Ginzburg-La ndau free energy that describes the magnetic and the structural transitions, and a competition between them. The parameters of the magnetic part of the free energy are derived from a mean-field solution of the magnetic interaction for arbitrary angular momentum. The theory provides a qualitative description of the observed magnetic and structural phase transitions as functions of Sr-doping level ($x$) for $y=0.25$.
The magnetic, electric and thermal properties of the ($Ln_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ perovskites ($Ln$~=~Pr, Nd) were investigated down to very low temperatures. The main attention was given to a peculiar metal-insulator transition, whic h is observed in the praseodymium based samples with $y=0.075$ and 0.15 at $T_{M-I}=64$ and 132~K, respectively. The study suggests that the transition, reported originally in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$, is not due to a mere change of cobalt ions from the intermediate- to the low-spin states, but is associated also with a significant electron transfer between Pr$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$/Co$^{4+}$ sites, so that the praseodymium ions occur below $T_{M-I}$ in a mixed Pr$^{3+}$/Pr$^{4+}$ valence. The presence of Pr$^{4+}$ ions in the insulating phase of the yttrium doped samples (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ is evidenced by Schottky peak originating in Zeeman splitting of the ground state Kramers doublet. The peak is absent in pure Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ in which metallic phase, based solely on non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ions, is retained down to the lowest temperature.
Nonstoichiometric Sr$_{1-y}$Mn$_{1-z}$Sb$_{2}$ (y, z~$<$0.1) is known to exhibit a coexistence of magnetic order and the nontrivial semimetallic behavior related to Dirac or Weyl fermions. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering analyses of the spin dynamics and density functional theory studies on the electronic properties of Sr$_{1-y}$Mn$_{1-z}$Sb$_{2}$. We observe a relatively large spin excitation gap $approx$ 8.5 meV at 5 K, and the interlayer magnetic exchange constant only 2.8 % of the dominant intralayer magnetic interaction, providing evidence that Sr$_{1-y}$Mn$_{1-z}$Sb$_{2}$ exhibits a quasi-2D magnetism. Using density functional theory, we find a strong influence of magnetic orders on the electronic band structure and the Dirac dispersions near the Fermi level along the Y-S direction in the presence of a ferromagnetic ordering. Our study unveils novel interplay between the magnetic order, magnetic transition, and electronic property in Sr$_{1-y}$Mn$_{1-z}$Sb$_{2}$, and opens new pathways to control the relativistic band structure through magnetism in ternary compounds.
Recent work predicted the existence of isotropic chiral phonon dispersion relations of the lowest bands connected to isotropic acoustical activity in cubic crystalline approximants of 3D chiral icosahedral metamaterial quasicrystals. While these arch itectures are fairly broadband and presumably robust against fabrication tolerances due to orientation averaging, they are extremely complex, very hard to manufacture experimentally, and they show effects which are about an order of magnitude smaller compared to those of ordinary highly anisotropic chiral cubic metamaterial crystals. Here, we propose and analyze a chiral triclinic metamaterial crystal exhibiting broadband isotropic acoustical activity. These 3D truss lattices are much less complex and exhibit substantially larger effects than the 3D quasicrystals at the price of being somewhat more susceptible to fabrication tolerances. This susceptibility originates from the fact that we have tailored the lowest two transverse phonon bands to exhibit an accidental degeneracy in momentum space.
