In order to improve the advantages and the reliability of the second derivative method in tracking the position of extrema from experimental curves, we develop a novel analysis method based on the mathematical concept of curvature. We derive the formulas for the curvature in one and two dimensions and demonstrate their applicability to simulated and experimental angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data. As compared to the second derivative, our new method improves the localization of the extrema and reduces the peak broadness for a better visualization on intensity image plots.

This paper presents a statistical method to subtract background in maximum likelihood fit, without relying on any separate sideband or simulation for background modeling. The method, called sFit, is an extension to the sPlot technique originally deve loped to reconstruct true distribution for each date component. The sWeights defined for the sPlot technique allow to construct a modified likelihood function using only the signal probability density function and events in the signal region. Contribution of background events in the signal region to the likelihood function cancels out on a statistical basis. Maximizing this likelihood function leads to unbiased estimates of the fit parameters in the signal probability density function.
Traditional methods of reporting changes in student responses have focused on class-wide averages. Such models hide information about the switches in responses by individual students over the course of a semester. We extend unpublished work by Steven Kanim on escalator diagrams which show changes in student responses from correct to incorrect (and vice versa) while representing pre- and post-instruction results on questions. Our extension consists of consistency plots in which we represent three forms of data: method of solution and correctness of solution both before and after instruction. Our data are from an intermediate mechanics class, and come from (nearly) identical midterm and final examination questions.
A new data analysis method is developed for the angle resolving silicon telescope introduced at the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN. The telescope has already been used in measurements of several neutron induced reactions with charged p articles in the exit channel. The development of a highly detailed method is necessitated by the latest joint measurement of the $^{12}$C($n,p$) and $^{12}$C($n,d$) reactions from n_TOF. The reliable analysis of these data must account for the challenging nature of the involved reactions, as they are affected by the multiple excited states in the daughter nuclei and characterized by the anisotropic angular distributions of the reaction products. The unabridged analysis procedure aims at the separate reconstruction of all relevant reaction parameters - the absolute cross section, the branching ratios and the angular distributions - from the integral number of the coincidental counts detected by the separate pairs of silicon strips. This procedure is tested under the specific conditions relevant for the $^{12}$C($n,p$) and $^{12}$C($n,d$) measurements from n_TOF, in order to assess its direct applicability to these experimental data. Based on the reached conclusions, the original method is adapted to a particular level of uncertainties in the input data.
AtomAI is an open-source software package bridging instrument-specific Python libraries, deep learning, and simulation tools into a single ecosystem. AtomAI allows direct applications of the deep convolutional neural networks for atomic and mesoscopi c image segmentation converting image and spectroscopy data into class-based local descriptors for downstream tasks such as statistical and graph analysis. For atomically-resolved imaging data, the output is types and positions of atomic species, with an option for subsequent refinement. AtomAI further allows the implementation of a broad range of image and spectrum analysis functions, including invariant variational autoencoders (VAEs). The latter consists of VAEs with rotational and (optionally) translational invariance for unsupervised and class-conditioned disentanglement of categorical and continuous data representations. In addition, AtomAI provides utilities for mapping structure-property relationships via im2spec and spec2im type of encoder-decoder models. Finally, AtomAI allows seamless connection to the first principles modeling with a Python interface, including molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations on the inferred atomic position. While the majority of applications to date were based on atomically resolved electron microscopy, the flexibility of AtomAI allows straightforward extension towards the analysis of mesoscopic imaging data once the labels and feature identification workflows are established/available. The source code and example notebooks are available at https://github.com/pycroscopy/atomai.
We propose a 2D generalization to the $M$-band case of the dual-tree decomposition structure (initially proposed by N. Kingsbury and further investigated by I. Selesnick) based on a Hilbert pair of wavelets. We particularly address (textit{i}) the co nstruction of the dual basis and (textit{ii}) the resulting directional analysis. We also revisit the necessary pre-processing stage in the $M$-band case. While several reconstructions are possible because of the redundancy of the representation, we propose a new optimal signal reconstruction technique, which minimizes potential estimation errors. The effectiveness of the proposed $M$-band decomposition is demonstrated via denoising comparisons on several image types (natural, texture, seismics), with various $M$-band wavelets and thresholding strategies. Significant improvements in terms of both overall noise reduction and direction preservation are observed.
