A new type of blockade effect - spin-orbit blockade (SOB) - is found in the conduction of a quantum dot (QD) made of a material with spin-orbit interaction. The blockade arises from spin-filtering effect in a quantum point contact (QPC), which is a component of the QD. Hence the appearance of the blockade itself evidences the spin-filtering effect in the QPC. The lower bound of filtering efficiency is estimated to be above 80%.

We have developed a novel technique for detection of spin polarization with a quantum dot weakly coupled to the objective device. The disturbance to the object in this technique is very small since the detection is performed through sampling of singl e electrons in the object with very slow rate. We have applied the method to a quantum point contact (QPC) under a spin-orbit interaction. A high degree of spin polarization in the vicinity of the QPC was detected when the conductance stayed on a plateau at a half of the unit conductance quantum ($G_{rm q}/2equiv e^2/h$), and also on another plateau at $2e^2/h$. On the half-quantum plateau, the degree of polarization $P$ decreased with the bias source-drain voltage of the QPC while $P$ increased on the single-quantum plateau, manifesting that different mechanisms of polarization were working on these plateaus. Very long spin relaxation times in the detector quantum dot probably due to dynamical nuclear spin polarization were observed. Anomalous decrease of $P$ around zero-bias was observed at a Kondo-like resonance peak.
We map electron spin dynamics from time to space in quantum wires with spatially uniform and oscillating Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The presence of the spin-orbit interaction introduces pseudo-Zeeman couplings of the electron spins to effective magn etic fields. We show that by periodically modulating the spin-orbit coupling along the quantum wire axis, it is possible to create the spatial analogue of spin resonance, without the need for any real magnetic fields. The mapping of time-dependent operations onto a spatial axis suggests a new mode for quantum information processing in which gate operations are encoded into the band structure of the material. We describe a realization of such materials within nanowires at the interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures.
We propose a new method for dynamic nuclear polarisation in a quasi one-dimensional quantum wire utilising the spin-orbit interaction, the hyperfine interaction, and a finite source-drain potential difference. In contrast with current methods, our sc heme does not rely on external magnetic or optical sources which makes independent control of closely placed devices much more feasible. Using this method, a significant polarisation of a few per cent is possible in currently available InAs wires which may be detected by conductance measurements. This may prove useful for nuclear-magnetic-resonance studies in nanoscale systems as well as in spin-based devices where external magnetic and optical sources will not be suitable.

Berry phase in a single quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is investigated theoretically. Berry phases as functions of magnetic field strength, dot size, spin-orbit coupling and photon-spin coupling constants are evaluated. It is shown that the Berry phase will alter dramatically from 0 to $2pi$ as the magnetic field strength increases. The threshold of magnetic field depends on the dot size and the spin-orbit coupling constant.
We investigated the time dependence of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot fabricated in an InAs nanowire. In this system, spin-orbit interaction has substantial influence on the spin states of confined electrons. Pumping single electron s through a Pauli spin-blockade configuration allowed to probe the dynamics of the two coupled spins via their influence on the pumped current. We observed spin-relaxation with a magnetic field dependence different from GaAs dots, which can be explained by spin-orbit interaction. Oscillations were detected for times shorter than the relaxation time, which we attribute to coherent evolution of the spin states.
