We present an analysis of the z ~ 0 morphology-environment relation for 911 bright (M_B < -19) galaxies, matching classical RC3 morphologies to the SDSS-based group catalog of Yang et al. We study how the relative fractions of spirals, lenticulars, a nd ellipticals depend on halo mass over a range of 10^11.7-10^14.8 h^-1 Msol. We pay particular attention to how morphology relates to central (most massive) vs satellite galaxy status. The fraction of galaxies which are elliptical is a strong function of stellar mass; it is also a strong function of halo mass, but only for central galaxies. We interpret this in a scenario where elliptical galaxies are formed, probably via mergers, as central galaxies within their halos; satellite ellipticals are previously central galaxies accreted onto larger halos. The overall fraction of S0 galaxies increases strongly with halo mass, from ~10% to ~70%. We find striking differences between the central and satellites: 20+/-2% of central M_* > 10^10.5 Msol galaxies are S0 regardless of halo mass, but satellite S0 galaxies are only found in massive (> 10^13 h^-1 Msol) halos, where they are 69+/-4% of the M_* > 10^10.5 Msol satellite population. This suggests two channels for S0 formation: one for central galaxies, and another which transforms lower mass (M_* <~ 10^11 Msol) accreted spirals into satellite S0 galaxies in massive halos. Analysis of finer morphological structure (bars and rings in disk galaxies) shows some trends with stellar mass, but none with halo mass; this is consistent with other recent studies which indicate that bars are not strongly influenced by galaxy environment. Radio sources in high-mass central galaxies are common, similarly so for elliptical and S0 galaxies, with a frequency that increases with halo mass. Emission-line AGN (mostly LINERs) are more common in S0s, but show no strong environmental trends (abridged).

We investigate the relation between the projected morphology (b/a) and the velocity dispersion (sigma_v) of groups of galaxies using two recently compiled group catalogs, one based on the 2MASS redshift survey and the other on the SDSS Data Release 5 galaxy catalog. We find that the sigma_v of groups is strongly correlated with the group projected b/a and size, with elongated and larger groups having a lower sigma_v. Such a correlation could be attributed to the dynamical evolution of groups, with groups in the initial stages of formation, having small sigma_v, a large size and an elongated shape that reflects the anisotropic accretion of galaxies along filamentary structures. The same sort of correlations, however, could also be reproduced in prolate-like groups, if the net galaxy motion is preferentially along the group elongation, since then the groups oriented close to the line of sight will appear more spherical, will have a small projected size and large sigma_v, while groups oriented close to the sky-plane will appear larger in projection, more elongated, and will have smaller sigma_v. We perform tests that relate only to the dynamical evolution of groups (eg., calculating the fraction of early type galaxies in groups) and indeed we find a strong positive (negative) correlation between the group sigma_v (projected major axis) with the fraction of early type galaxies. We conclude that (a) the observed dependencies of the group sigma_v on the group projected size and b/a, should be attributed mostly to the dynamical state of groups and (b) groups in the local universe do not constitute a family of objects in dynamical equilibrium, but rather a family of cosmic structures that are presently at various stages of their virialization process.

We discuss the nature and origin of the nuclear activity observed in a sample of 292 SDSS narrow-emission-line galaxies, considered to have formed and evolved in isolation. All these galaxies are spiral like and show some kind of nuclear activity. Th e fraction of Narrow Line AGNs (NLAGNs) and Transition type Objects (TOs; a NLAGN with circumnuclear star formation) is relatively high, amounting to 64% of the galaxies. There is a definite trend for the NLAGNs to appear in early-type spirals, while the star forming galaxies and TOs are found in later-type spirals. We verify that the probability for a galaxy to show an AGN characteristic increases with the bulge mass of the galaxy (Torre-Papaqui et al. 2011), and find evidence that this trend is really a by-product of the morphology, suggesting that the AGN phenomenon is intimately connected with the formation process of the galaxies. Consistent with this interpretation, we establish a strong connection between the astration rate--the efficiency with which the gas is transformed into stars--the AGN phenomenon, and the gravitational binding energy of the galaxies: the higher the binding energy, the higher the astration rate and the higher the probability to find an AGN. A large sample of low surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies is selected from SDSS with B-band central surface brightness mu_0(B) from 22 to 24.5 mag arcsec^(-2). Some of their properties are studied, such as magnitudes, surface brightness, scaleleng ths, colors, metallicities, stellar populations, stellar masses and multiwavelength SEDs from UV to IR etc. These properties of LSB galaxies have been compared with those of the galaxies with higher surface brightnesses. Then we check the variations of these properties following surface brightness.
Parallel analysis of the large-scale morphology and local environment of matched active and control galaxy samples plays an important role in studies of the fueling of active galactic nuclei. We carry out a detailed morphological characterization of a sample of 35 Seyfert galaxies and a matched sample of inactive galaxies in order to compare the evidence of non-axisymmetric perturbation of the potential and, in the second part of this paper, to be able to perform a multicomponent photometric decomposition of the Seyfert galaxies. We constructed contour maps, BVRcIc profiles of the surface brightness, ellipticity, and position angle, as well as colour index profiles. We further used colour index images, residual images, and structure maps, which helped clarify the morphology of the galaxies. We studied the presence of close companions using literature data. By straightening out the morphological status of some of the objects, we derived an improved morphological classification and built a solid basis for a further multicomponent decomposition of the Seyfert sample. We report hitherto undetected (to our knowledge) structural components in some Seyfert galaxies - a bar (Ark 479), an oval/lens (Mrk 595), rings (Ark 120, Mrk 376), a nuclear bar and ring (Mrk 352), and nuclear dust lanes (Mrk 590). We compared the large-scale morphology and local environment of the Seyfert sample to those of the control one and found that (1) the two samples show similar incidences of bars, rings, asymmetries, and close companions; (2) the Seyfert bars are generally weaker than the bars of the control galaxies; (3) the bulk of the two samples shows morphological evidence of non-axisymmetric perturbations of the potential or close companions; (4) the fueling of Seyfert nuclei is not directly related to the large-scale morphology and local environment of their host galaxies.
