Terahertz (THz) radiation occupies a very large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and has generated much recent interest due to its ability to penetrate deep into many organic materials without the damage associated with ionizing radiation such as x-rays. One path for generating copious amount of tunable narrow-band THz radiation is based on the Smith-Purcell free-electron laser (SPFEL) effect. In this Letter we propose a simple concept for a compact two-stage tunable SPFEL operating in the superradiant regime capable of radiating at the gratings fundamental bunching frequency. We demonstrate its capabilities and performances via computer simulation using the conformal finite-difference time-domain electromagnetic solver {sc vorpal}.

The generation of ultra-relativistic positron beams with short duration ($tau_{e^+} leq 30$ fs), small divergence ($theta_{e^+} simeq 3$ mrad), and high density ($n_{e^+} simeq 10^{14} - 10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$) from a fully optical setup is reported. The detected positron beam propagates with a high-density electron beam and $gamma$-rays of similar spectral shape and peak energy, thus closely resembling the structure of an astrophysical leptonic jet. It is envisaged that this experimental evidence, besides the intrinsic relevance to laser-driven particle acceleration, may open the pathway for the small-scale study of astrophysical leptonic jets in the laboratory.
Coherent Smith-Purcell radiation generated by bunched electron beam in the lamellar metal and dielectric gratings in the millimeter wavelength range was compared theoretically and experimentally. For theoretical estimation a simple model suitable for both dielectric and metal gratings was developed. Experimental comparison was carried out using extracted bunched 6.1 MeV electron beam of the microtron at Nuclear Physics Institute (Tomsk Polytechnic University). Both theoretical estimations and experimental data showed the difference of the radiation characteristics from the lamellar metal and dielectric gratings. The radiation from the dielectric grating had peak structure not monotonic one and was more intense comparing with metal grating radiation in the wavelength less than coherent threshold. These differences may be useful for research and development of new compact monochromatic radiation sources in sub-THz and THz region.
We investigate the radiation from a charge rotating around conductors with cylindrical symmetry. First the problem is considered with a charge rotating around a conducting cylinder immersed in a homogeneous medium. The surface charge and current dens ities induced on the cylinder surface are evaluated. A formula is derived for the spectral-angular density of the radiation intensity. In the second part, we study the radiation for a charge rotating around a diffraction grating on a cylindrical surface with metallic strips parallel to the cylinder axis. The effect of the grating on the radiation intensity is approximated by the surface currents induced on the strips by the field of the rotating charge. The expressions are derived for the electric and magnetic fields and for the angular density of the radiation intensity on a given harmonic. We show that the interference between the synchrotron and Smith-Purcell radiations may lead to interesting features. In particular, the behavior of the radiation intensity on large harmonics can be essentially different from that for a charge rotating in the vacuum or around a solid cylinder. Unlike to these limiting cases, for the geometry of diffraction grating the radiation intensity on higher harmonics does not vanish for small angles with respect to the cylinder axis. For given characteristics of the charge, by the choice of the parameters of the diffraction grating, one can have highly directional radiation near the normal to the plane of the charge rotation. With decreasing energy, the relative contribution of the synchrotron radiation decreases and the Smith-Purcell part is dominant.
The Linac Coherent Light Source changes configurations multiple times per day, necessitating fast tuning strategies to reduce setup time for successive experiments. To this end, we employ a Bayesian approach to transport optics tuning to optimize gro ups of quadrupole magnets. We use a Gaussian process to provide a probabilistic model of the machine response with respect to control parameters from a modest number of samples. Subsequent samples are selected during optimization using a statistical test combining the model prediction and uncertainty. The model parameters are fit from archived scans, and correlations between devices are added from a simple beam transport model. The result is a sample-efficient optimization routine, which we show significantly outperforms existing optimizers.
We investigate parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) under condition of the extremely asymmetric diffraction, when the ultra-relativistic electron bunch is moving in textit{vacuum} parallel to the crystal-vacuum interface, close to the crystal surface. Th is type of geometry coincides with the well known mechanism of generation of radiation, when the self-field of the particle beam interacts with the reflecting metal grating, namely the Smith-Purcell effect. We demonstrate that in this geometry the main contribution is given via a tail region of the beam distribution, which penetrates the crystal and X-rays are radiated along the normal to the crystal surface. We determine the electron beam characteristics, when this phenomenon can be observed. It is essential that in this geometry the majority of electrons does not undergo multiple scattering and consequently the characteristics of the particle beam are not changed, thus allowing the usage of the emitted X-rays for the purpose of non-destructive beam diagnostics, which can complement the traditional knife-edge method.
