Results are presented from NIR spectroscopy of a sample of BzK-selected, massive star-forming galaxies (sBzKs) at 1.5<z<2.3 that were obtained with OHS/CISCO at Subaru and with SINFONI at VLT. Among the 28 sBzKs observed, Ha emission was detected in 14 objects, and for 11 of them the [NII]6583 was also measured. Multiwavelength photometry was also used to derive stellar masses and extinction parameters, whereas Ha and [NII] have allowed us to estimate SFR, metallicities, ionization mechanisms, and dynamical masses. In order to enforce agreement between SFRs from Ha with those derived from rest-frame UV and MIR, additional obscuration for the emission lines (that originate in HII regions) was required compared to the extinction derived from the slope of the UV continuum. We have also derived the stellar mass-metallicity relation, as well as the relation between stellar mass and specific SFR, and compared them to the results in other studies. At a given stellar mass, the sBzKs appear to have been already enriched to metallicities close to those of local star-forming galaxies of similar mass. The sBzKs presented here tend to have higher metallicities compared to those of UV-selected galaxies, indicating that NIR selected galaxies tend to be a chemically more evolved population. The sBzKs show specific SFRs that are systematically higher, by up to ~2 orders of magnitude, compared to those of local galaxies of the same mass. The empirical correlations between stellar mass and metallicity, and stellar mass and specific SFR are then compared with those of population synthesis models constructed either with the simple closed-box assumption, or within an infall scenario. Within the assumptions that are built-in such models, it appears that a short timescale for the star-formation (~100 Myr) and large initial gas mass appear to be required if one wants to reproduce both relations simultaneously.

We present deep, high-quality K-band images of complete subsamples of powerful radio and sub-mm galaxies at z=2. The data were obtained in the best available seeing at UKIRT and Gemini North, with integration times scaled to ensure that comparable re st-frame surface brightness levels are reached for all galaxies. We fit two-dimensional axi-symmetric galaxy models to determine galaxy morphologies at rest-frame optical wavelengths > 4000A, varying luminosity, axial ratio, half-light radius, and Sersic index. We find that, while some images show evidence of galaxy interactions, >95% of the rest-frame optical light in all galaxies is well-described by these simple models. We also find a clear difference in morphology between these two classes of galaxy; fits to the individual images and image stacks reveal that the radio galaxies are moderately large (<r{1/2}>=8.4+-1.1kpc; median r{1/2}=7.8), de Vaucouleurs spheroids (<n> = 4.07+-0.27; median n=3.87), while the sub-mm galaxies appear to be moderately compact (<r{1/2}>=3.4+-0.3kpc; median r{1/2}=3.1kpc) exponential discs (<n>=1.44+-0.16; median n=1.08). We show that the z=2 radio galaxies display a well-defined Kormendy relation but that, while larger than other recently-studied high-z massive galaxy populations, they are still ~1.5 times smaller than their local counterparts. The scalelengths of the starlight in the sub-mm galaxies are comparable to those reported for the molecular gas. Their sizes are also similar to those of comparably massive quiescent galaxies at z>1.5. In terms of stellar mass surface density, the majority of the radio galaxies lie within the locus defined by local ellipticals. In contrast, while best modelled as discs, most of the sub-mm galaxies have higher stellar mass densities than local galaxies, and appear destined to evolve into present-day massive ellipticals.
We discuss the clustering properties of galaxies with signs of ongoing star formation detected by the Spitzer Space Telescope at 24mum band in the SWIRE Lockman Hole field. The sample of mid-IR-selected galaxies includes ~20,000 objects detected abov e a flux threshold of S24mum=310muJy. We adopt optical/near-IR color selection criteria to split the sample into the lower-redshift and higher-redshift galaxy populations. We measure the angular correlation function on scales of theta=0.01-3.5 deg, from which, using the Limber inversion along with the redshift distribution established for similarly selected source populations in the GOODS fields (Rodighiero et al. 2010), we obtain comoving correlation lengths of r0=4.98+-0.28 h^-1 Mpc and r0 =8.04+-0.69 h^-1 Mpc for the low-z (<z>=0.7) and high-z (<z>=1.7) subsamples, respectively. Comparing these measurements with the correlation functions of dark matter halos identified in the Bolshoi cosmological simulation (Klypin et al. 2011}, we find that the high-redshift objects reside in progressively more massive halos reaching Mtot>3e12 h^-1 Msun, compared to Mtot>7e11 h^-1 Msun for the low-redshift population. Approximate estimates of the IR luminosities based on the catalogs of 24mum sources in the GOODS fields show that our high-z subsample represents a population of distant ULIRGs with LIR>10^12Lsun, while the low-z subsample mainly consists of LIRGs, LIR~10^11Lsun. The comparison of number density of the 24mum selected galaxies and of dark matter halos with derived minimum mass Mtot shows that only 20% of such halos may host star-forming galaxies.
Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we have conducted a blind redshift survey in the 3 mm atmospheric transmission window for 26 strongly lensd dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected with the South Pole Telescope (SPT ). The sources were selected to have S_1.4mm>20 mJy and a dust-like spectrum and, to remove low-z sources, not have bright radio (S_843MHz<6mJy) or far-infrared counterparts (S_100um<1 Jy, S_60um<200mJy). We robustly detect 44 line features in our survey, which we identify as redshifted emission lines of 12CO, 13CO, [CI], H2O, and H2O+. We find one or more spectral features in 23 sources yielding a ~90% detection rate for this survey; in 12 of these sources we detect multiple lines, while in 11 sources we detect only a single line. For the sources with only one detected line, we break the redshift degeneracy with additional spectroscopic observations if available, or infer the most likely line identification based on photometric data. This yields secure redshifts for ~70% of the sample. The three sources with no lines detected are tentatively placed in the redshift desert between 1.7<z<2.0. The resulting mean redshift of our sample is <z>=3.5. This finding is in contrast to the redshift distribution of radio-identified DSFGs, which have a significantly lower mean redshift of <z>=2.3 and for which only 10-15% of the population is expected to be at z>3. We discuss the effect of gravitational lensing on the redshift distribution and compare our measured redshift distribution to that of models in the literature.
We present low-resolution, rest-frame ~ 5 - 12 micron Spitzer/IRS spectra of two lensed z ~ 2 UV-bright star-forming galaxies, SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 and SDSS J090122.37+181432.3. Using the magnification boost from lensing, we are able to study the physical properties of these objects in greater detail than is possible for unlensed systems. In both targets, we detect strong PAH emission at 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 microns, indicating the presence of vigorous star formation. For J1206, we find a steeply rising continuum and significant [S IV] emission, suggesting that a moderately hard radiation field is powering continuum emission from small dust grains. The strength of the [S IV] emission also implies a sub-solar metallicity of ~ 0.5 Z_{Sun}, confirming published rest-frame optical measurements. In J0901, the PAH lines have large rest-frame equivalent widths (> 1 micron) and the continuum rises slowly with wavelength, suggesting that any AGN contribution to L_{IR} is insignificant, in contrast to the implications of optical emission-line diagnostics. Using [O III] line flux as a proxy for AGN strength, we estimate that the AGN in J0901 provides only a small fraction of its mid-infrared continuum flux. By combining the detection of [Ar II] with an upper limit on [Ar III] emission, we infer a metallicity of > 1.3 Z_{Sun}. This work highlights the importance of combining rest-frame optical and mid-IR spectroscopy in order to understand the detailed properties of star-forming galaxies at high redshift.
We compare the relations among various integrated characteristics of ~25,000 low-redshift (z<1.0) compact star-forming galaxies (CSFGs) from Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and of high-redshift (z>1.5) star-forming galax ies (SFGs) with respect to oxygen abundances, stellar masses M*, far-UV absolute magnitudes M(FUV), star-formation rates SFR and specific star-formation rates sSFR, Lyman-continuum photon production efficiencies (xi_ion), UV continuum slopes beta, [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 and [NeIII]3868/[OII]3727 ratios, and emission-line equivalent widths EW([OII]3727), EW([OIII]5007), and EW(Halpha). We find that the relations for low-z CSFGs with high equivalent widths of the Hbeta emission line, EW(Hbeta)>100A, and high-z SFGs are very similar, implying close physical properties in these two categories of galaxies. Thus, CSFGs are likely excellent proxies for the SFGs in the high-z Universe. They also extend to galaxies with lower stellar masses, down to ~10^6 Msun, and to absolute FUV magnitudes as faint as -14 mag. Thanks to their proximity, CSFGs can be studied in much greater detail than distant SFGs. Therefore, the relations between the integrated characteristics of the large sample of CSFGs studied here can prove very useful for our understanding of high-z dwarf galaxies in future observations with large ground-based and space telescopes.
