We report results of both Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo(DMC) method and Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo(RMC) method on the potential energy curve of the helium dimer. We show that it is possible to obtain a highly accurate description of the helium dimer. An improved stochastic reconfiguration technique is employed to optimize the many-body wave function, which is the starting point for highly accurate simulations based on the Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo(DMC) and Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) methods. We find that the results of these methods are in excellent agreement with the best theoretical results at short range, especially recently developed Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo(RMC) method, yield practically accurate results with reduced statistical error, which gives very excellent agreement across the whole potential. For the equilibrium internuclear distance of 5.6 bohr, the calculated electronic energy with Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo(RMC) method is 5.807483599$pm$0.000000015 hartrees and the corresponding well depth is -11.003$pm$0.005 K.

We report an accurate study of interactions between Benzene molecules using variational quantum Monte Carlo (VMC) and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) methods. We compare these results with density functional theory (DFT) using different van der W aals (vdW) functionals. In our QMC calculations, we use accurate correlated trial wave functions including three-body Jastrow factors, and backflow transformations. We consider two benzene molecules in the parallel displaced (PD) geometry, and find that by highly optimizing the wave function and introducing more dynamical correlation into the wave function, we compute the weak chemical binding energy between aromatic rings accurately. We find optimal VMC and DMC binding energies of -2.3(4) and -2.7(3) kcal/mol, respectively. The best estimate of the CCSD(T)/CBS limit is -2.65(2) kcal/mol [E. Miliordos et al, J. Phys. Chem. A 118, 7568 (2014)]. Our results indicate that QMC methods give chemical accuracy for weakly bound van der Waals molecular interactions, comparable to results from the best quantum chemistry methods.
Dimers of carbon disulfide (CS$_2$) molecules embedded in helium nanodroplets are aligned using a moderately intense, 160ps, non-resonant, circularly polarized laser pulse. It is shown that the intermolecular carbon-carbon (C-C) axis aligns along the axis perpendicular to the polarization plane of the alignment laser pulse. The degree of alignment, quantified by $langle cos^2(theta_text{2D}) rangle$, is determined from the emission directions of recoiling CS$_2$$^+$ fragment ions, created when an intense 40fs probe laser pulse doubly ionizes the dimers. Here, $theta_text{2D}$ is the projection of the angle between the C-C axis on the 2D ion detector and the normal to the polarization plane. $langle cos^2(theta_text{2D}) rangle$ is measured as a function of the alignment laser intensity and the results agree well with $langle cos^2(theta_text{2D}) rangle$ calculated for gas-phase CS$_2$ dimers with a rotational temperature of 0.4K.
During compression of a water dimer calculated with high-precision first-principles methods, the trends of H-bond and O-H bond lengths show quantum effect of the electronic structure. We found that the H-bond length keeps decreasing, while the O-H bo nd length increases up to the stable point and decreases beyond it when the water dimer is further compressed. The remarkable properties are different from those observed in most previous researches which can be understood and extrapolated through classical simulation. The observations can be explained by the decrease in orbital overlap and change in the exchange repulsion interaction between water monomers. The dominant interaction between water monomers changes from electrostatic interaction to exchange repulsion at the turning point of the O-H bond length when the O...O distance is decreased. These findings highlight the quantum effect on the hydrogen bond in extreme conditions and play an important role in the recognition of the hydrogen bond structure and mechanism.
The lowest doublet electronic state for the lithium trimer (2A) is calculated for use in three-body scattering calculations using the valence electron FCI method with atomic cores represented using an effective core potential. It is shown that an acc urate description of core-valence correlation is necessary for accurate calculations of molecular bond lengths, frequencies and dissociation energies. Interpolation between 2A ab initio surface data points in a sparse grid is done using the global interpolant moving least squares method with a smooth radial data cutoff function included in the fitting weights and bivariate polynomials as a basis set. The Jahn-Teller splitting of the 2E surface into the 2A1 and 2B2 states is investigated using a combination of both CASSCF and FCI levels of theory. Additionally, preliminary calculations of the 2A surface are also presented using second order spin restricted open-shell Moller-Plesset perturbation theory.
Doubly-excited Rydberg states of helium (He) nanodroplets have been studied using synchrotron radiation. We observed Fano resonances related to the atomic N = 2,0 series as a function of droplet size. Although similar qualitatively to their atomic co unterparts, the resonance lines are broader and exhibit a shift in energy which increases for the higher excited states. Furthermore, additional resonances are observed which are not seen in atomic systems. We discuss these features in terms of delocalized atomic states perturbed by the surrounding He atoms and compare to singly excited droplets.
