Various phonemes are considered in terms of nonlinear dynamics. Phase portraits of the signals in the embedded space, correlation dimension estimate and the largest Lyapunov exponent are analyzed. It is shown that the speech signals have comparatively small dimension and the positive largest Lyapunov exponent

The problem of separation of an observed sum of chaotic signals into the individual components in the presence of noise on the path to the observer is considered. A noise threshold is found above which high-quality separation is impossible. Below the threshold, each signal is recovered with any prescribed accuracy. This effect is shown to be associated with the information content of the chaotic signals and a theoretical estimate is given for the threshold.
This paper presents a phase description of chaotic dynamics for the study of chaotic phase synchronization. A prominent feature of the proposed description is that it systematically incorporates the dynamics of the non-phase variables inherent in the system. Taking these non-phase dynamics into account is essential for capturing the complicated nature of chaotic phase synchronization, even in a qualitative manner. We numerically verified the validity of the proposed description for the R{o}ssler and Lorenz oscillators, and found that our method provides an accurate description of the characteristic distorted shapes of the synchronization regions of their chaotic oscillators. Furthermore, the proposed description allowed us to systematically explain the origin of this distortion.
The Nikolaevskiy model for pattern formation with continuous symmetry exhibits spatiotemporal chaos with strong scale separation. Extensive numerical investigations of the chaotic attractor reveal unexpected scaling behavior of the long-wave modes. S urprisingly, the computed amplitude and correlation time scalings are found to differ from the values obtained by asymptotically consistent multiple-scale analysis. However, when higher-order corrections are added to the leading-order theory of Matthews and Cox, the anomalous scaling is recovered.
We study the effects of finite-sizeness on small, neutrally buoyant, spherical particles advected by open chaotic flows. We show that, when projected onto configuration space, the advected finite-size particles disperse about the unstable manifold of the chaotic saddle that governs the passive advection. Using a discrete-time system for the dynamics, we obtain an expression predicting the dispersion of the finite-size particles in terms of their Stokes parameter at the onset of the finite-sizeness induced dispersion. We test our theory in a system derived from a flow and find remarkable agreement between our expression and the numerically measured dispersion.
This paper analyzes the security of a recent cryptosystem based on the ergodicity property of chaotic maps. It is shown how to obtain the secret key using a chosen-ciphertext attack. Some other design weaknesses are also shown.
