Recent experiments exhibit a rate-dependence for granular shear such that the stress grows linearly in the logarithm of the shear rate, dot{gamma}. Assuming a generalized activated process mechanism, we show that these observations are consistent with a recent proposal for a stress-based statistical ensemble. By contrast, predictions for rate-dependence using conventional energy-based statistical mechanics to describe activated processes, predicts a rate dependence that of (ln (dot{gamma}))^{1/2}.

The mechanics of cohesive or cemented granular materials is complex, combining the heterogeneous responses of granular media, like force chains, with clearly defined material properties. Here, we use a discrete element model (DEM) simulation, consist ing of an assemblage of elastic particles connected by softer but breakable elastic bonds, to explore how this class of material deforms and fails under uniaxial compression. We are particularly interested in the connection between the microscopic interactions among the grains or particles and the macroscopic material response. To this end, the properties of the particles and the stiffness of the bonds are matched to experimental measurements of a cohesive granular media with tunable elasticity. The criterion for breaking a bond is also based on an explicit Griffith energy balance, with realistic surface energies. By varying the initial volume fraction of the particle assembles we show that this simple model reproduces a wide range of experimental behaviors, both in the elastic limit and beyond it. These include quantitative details of the distinct failure modes of shear-banding, ductile failure and compaction banding or anti-cracks, as well as the transitions between these modes. The present work, therefore, provides a unified framework for understanding the failure of porous materials such as sandstone, marble, powder aggregates, snow and foam.
We investigate by means of molecular dynamics simulation a coarse-grained polymer glass model focusing on (quasi-static and dynamical) shear-stress fluctuations as a function of temperature T and sampling time $Delta t$. The linear response is charac terized using (ensemble-averaged) expectation values of the contributions (time-averaged for each shear plane) to the stress-fluctuation relation $mu_{sf}$ for the shear modulus and the shear-stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$. Using 100 independent configurations we pay attention to the respective standard deviations. While the ensemble-averaged modulus $mu_{sf}(T)$ decreases continuously with increasing T for all $Delta t$ sampled, its standard deviation $delta mu_{sf}(T)$ is non-monotonous with a striking peak at the glass transition. The question of whether the shear modulus is continuous or has a jump-singularity at the glass transition is thus ill-posed. Confirming the effective time-translational invariance of our systems, the $Delta t$-dependence of $mu_{sf}$ and related quantities can be understood using a weighted integral over $G(t)$. This implies that the shear viscosity $eta(T)$ may be readily obtained from the $1/Delta t$-decay of $mu_{sf}$ above the glass transition.

We present experiments on slow shear flow in a split-bottom linear shear cell, filled with layered granular materials. Shearing through two different materials separated by a flat material boundary is shown to give narrow shear zones, which refract a t the material boundary in accordance with Snells law in optics. The shear zone is the one that minimizes the dissipation rate upon shearing, i.e.a manifestation of the principle of least dissipation. We have prepared the materials as to form a granular lens. Shearing through the lens is shown to give a very broad shear zone, which corresponds to fulfilling Snells law for a continuous range of paths through the cell.
Recent experiments with rotational diffusion of a probe in a vibrated granular media revealed a rich scenario, ranging from the dilute gas to the dense liquid with cage effects and an unexpected superdiffusive behavior at large times. Here we setup a simulation that reproduces quantitatively the experimental observations and allows us to investigate the properties of the host granular medium, a task not feasible in the experiment. We discover a persistent collective rotational mode which emerges at high density and low granular temperature: a macroscopic fraction of the medium slowly rotates, randomly switching direction after very long times. Such a rotational mode of the host medium is the origin of probes superdiffusion. Collective motion is accompanied by a kind of dynamical heterogeneity at intermediate times (in the cage stage) followed by a strong reduction of fluctuations at late times, when superdiffusion sets in.

We experimentally investigate the rheology and stress fluctuations of granules densely suspended in silicone oil. We find that both thickening strength and stress fluctuations significantly weaken with oil viscosity $eta_0$. Comparison of our rheolog ical results to the Wyart-Cates model for describing different dynamic jamming states suggests a transition from frictional contacts to lubrication interactions as $eta_0$ increases. To clarify the contribution from viscous interactions to the rheology, we systematically measure stress fluctuations in various flow states. Reduction of stress fluctuations with $eta_0$ indicates that a strong lubrication layer greatly inhibits force correlations among particles. Measuring stress fluctuations in the strong shear thickening regime, we observe a crossover from asymmetric Gamma to symmetric Gaussian distributions and associated with it a decrease of lateral (radial) correlation length $xi$ with increasing shear rate.
