The frequency-dependent response of a one-dimensional fermion system is investigated using Current Density Functional Theory (CDFT) within the local approximation (LDA). DFT-LDA, and in particular CDFT-LDA, reproduces very well the dispersion of the collective excitations. Unsurprisingly, however, the approximation fails for details of the dynamic response for large wavevectors. In particular, we introduce CDFT for the one-dimensional spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor interaction, and use CDFT-LDA plus exact (Bethe ansatz) results for the groundstate energy as function of particle density and boundary phase to determine the linear response. The successes and failures of this approach are discussed in detail.

The Bethe-Ansatz local density approximation (LDA) to lattice density functional theory (LDFT) for the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model is extended to current-LDFT (CLDFT). The transport properties of mesoscopic Hubbard rings threaded by a mag netic flux are then systematically investigated by this scheme. In particular we present calculations of ground state energies, persistent currents and Drude weights for both a repulsive homogeneous and a single impurity Hubbard model. Our results for the ground state energies in the metallic phase compares favorably well with those obtained with numerically accurate many-body techniques. Also the dependence of the persistent currents on the Coulomb and the impurity interaction strength, and on the ring size are all well captured by LDA-CLDFT. Our study demonstrates that CLDFT is a powerful tool for studying one-dimensional correlated electron systems with high accuracy and low computational costs.
Motivated by the large interest in the non-equilibrium dynamics of low-dimensional quantum many-body systems, we present a fully-microscopic theoretical and numerical study of the charge and spin dynamics in a one-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas foll owing a quench. Our approach, which is based on time-dependent current-density-functional theory, is applicable well beyond the linear-response regime and produces both spin-charge separation and spin-drag-induced broadening of the spin packets.
Density functional theory underlies the most successful and widely used numerical methods for electronic structure prediction of solids. However, it has the fundamental shortcoming that the universal density functional is unknown. In addition, the co mputational result---energy and charge density distribution of the ground state---is useful for electronic properties of solids mostly when reduced to a band structure interpretation based on the Kohn-Sham approach. Here, we demonstrate how machine learning algorithms can help to free density functional theory from these limitations. We study a theory of spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice. The density functional is implicitly represented by a neural network, which predicts, besides the ground-state energy and density distribution, density-density correlation functions. At no point do we require a band structure interpretation. The training data, obtained via exact diagonalization, feeds into a learning scheme inspired by active learning, which minimizes the computational costs for data generation. We show that the network results are of high quantitative accuracy and, despite learning on random potentials, capture both symmetry-breaking and topological phase transitions correctly.

We propose a lattice density-functional theory for {it ab initio} quantum chemistry or physics as a route to an efficient approach that approximates the full configuration interaction energy and orbital occupations for molecules with strongly-correla ted electrons. We build on lattice density-functional theory for the Hubbard model by deriving Kohn-Sham equations for a reduced then full quantum chemistry Hamiltonian, and demonstrate the method on the potential energy curves for the challenging problem of modelling elongating bonds in a linear chain of six hydrogen atoms. Here the accuracy of the Bethe-ansatz local-density approximation is tested for this quantum chemistry system and we find that, despite this approximate functional being designed for the Hubbard model, the shapes of the potential curves generally agree with the full configuration interaction results. Although there is a discrepancy for very stretched bonds, this is lower than when using standard density-functional theory with the local-density approximation.

Time-dependent current-density-functional theory (TDCDFT) provides an in principle exact scheme to calculate efficiently response functions for a very broad range of applications. However, the lack of approximations valid for a range of parameters me t in experimental conditions has so far delayed its extensive use in inhomogeneous systems. On the other side, in many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) accurate approximations are available, but at a price of a higher computational cost. In the present work the possibility of combining the advantages of both approaches is exploited. In this way an exact equation for the exchange-correlation kernel of TDCDFT is obtained, which opens the way for a systematic improvement of the approximations adopted in practical applications. Finally, an approximate kernel for an efficient calculation of spectra of solids and molecular conductances is suggested and its validity discussed.
