Researchers have found that the metabolisms of organisms appear to scale proportionally to a 3/4 power of their mass. Mathematics in this article suggests that the capacity of an isotropically radiating energy supply scales up by a 4/3 power as its size (and therefore the degrees of freedom of its circulatory system) increases. Accordingly, cellular metabolism scales inversely by a 3/4 power, likely to prevent the 4/3 scaling up of the energy supply overheating the cell. The same 4/3 power scaling may explain cosmological dark energy.

We consider parsimonious construction of empirical equations, to promote interest in them as a stepping-stone model to the physical law. To this end, we provide a variety of historical examples and simulate a parsimonious empirical calculation of Pla nck law, and of van der Waals equation. Thereby we provide a) Empirical forms of Planck law, and b) Collation of verified symmetries and catastrophes-like properties of empirical P-T surface of real gases. An empirical equation of state for a real gas should take account of these properties.
Based on quantum origin of the universe, in this article we find that the universal wave function can be far richer than the superposition of many classical worlds studied by Everett. By analyzing the more general universal wave function and its unit ary evolutions, we find that on small scale we can obtain Newtons law of universal gravity, while on the scale of galaxies we naturally derive gravitational effects corresponding to dark matter, without modifying any physical principles or hypothesizing the existence of new elementary particles. We find that an auxiliary function having formal symmetry is very useful to predict the evolution of the classical information in the universal wave function.
In this paper, we introduce the on-line Viterbi algorithm for decoding hidden Markov models (HMMs) in much smaller than linear space. Our analysis on two-state HMMs suggests that the expected maximum memory used to decode sequence of length $n$ with $m$-state HMM can be as low as $Theta(mlog n)$, without a significant slow-down compared to the classical Viterbi algorithm. Classical Viterbi algorithm requires $O(mn)$ space, which is impractical for analysis of long DNA sequences (such as complete human genome chromosomes) and for continuous data streams. We also experimentally demonstrate the performance of the on-line Viterbi algorithm on a simple HMM for gene finding on both simulated and real DNA sequences.

We analyze the the convergence behavior of block GMRES and characterize the phenomenon of stagnation which is then related to the behavior of the block FOM method. We generalize the block FOM method to generate well-defined approximations in the case that block FOM would normally break down, and these generalized solutions are used in our analysis. This behavior is also related to the principal angles between the column-space of the previous block GMRES residual and the current minimum residual constraint space. At iteration $j$, it is shown that the proper generalization of GMRES stagnation to the block setting relates to the columnspace of the $j$th block Arnoldi vector. Our analysis covers both the cases of normal iterations as well as block Arnoldi breakdown wherein dependent basis vectors are replaced with random ones. Numerical examples are given to illustrate what we have proven, including a small application problem to demonstrate the validity of the analysis in a less pathological case.
Based on first principles calculations, the electronic structure of CuTeO$_4$ is discussed in the context of superconducting cuprates. Despite some significant crystallographic differences, we find that CuTeO$_4$ is similar to these cuprates, exhibit ing a quasi two dimensional electronic structure that involves hybridized Cu-$d$ and O-$p$ states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, along with an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state. Hole doping this material by substituting Te$^{6+}$ with Sb$^{5+}$ would be of significant interest.
