We report the first experimental observation of bright EPR beams produced by a type-II optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold at frequency degeneracy. The degenerate operation is obtained by introducing a birefringent plate inside the cavity resulting in phase locking. After filtering the pump noise, which plays a critical role, continuous-variable EPR correlations between the orthogonally polarized signal and idler beams are demonstrated.

A new device to generate polarization-entangled light in the continuous variable regime is introduced. It consists of an Optical Parametric Oscillator with two type-II phase-matched non-linear crystals orthogonally oriented, associated with birefring ent elements for adjustable linear coupling. We give in this paper a theoretical study of its classical and quantum properties. It is shown that two optical beams with adjustable frequencies and well-defined polarization can be emitted. The Stokes parameters of the two beams are entangled. The principal advantage of this setup is the possibility to directly generate polarization entangled light without the need of mixing four modes on beam splitters as required in current experimental setups. This device opens new directions for the study of light-matter interfaces and generation of multimode non-classical light and higher dimensional phase space.

We propose and analyse a nonlinear optical apparatus in which the direction of asymmetric steering is controllable within the apparatus, rather than by adding noise to measurements. Using a nondegenerate parametric oscillator with an injected signal field, we show how the directionality and extent of the steering can be readily controlled for output modes which can be up to one octave apart. The two downconverted modes, which exhibit the greater violations of the steering inequalities, can also be controlled to exhibit asymmetric steering in some regimes.
By identifying the similarities between the coupled-wave equations and the parametrically driven nonlinear Schrodinger equation, we unveil the existence condition of the quadratic soliton mode-locked degenerate optical parametric oscillator in the pr eviously unexplored parameter space of near-zero group velocity mismatch. We study the nature of the quadratic solitons and divide their dynamics into two distinctive branches depending on the system parameters. We find the nonlinear interaction between the resonant pump and signal results in phenomena that resemble the dispersive two-photon absorption and the dispersive Kerr effect. Origin of the quadratic soliton perturbation is identified and strategy to mitigate its detrimental effect is developed. Terahertz comb bandwidth and femtosecond pulse duration are attainable in an example periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide resonator in the short-wave infrared and an example orientation-patterned gallium arsenide free-space cavity in the long-wave infrared. The quadratic soliton mode-locking principle can be extended to other material platforms, making it a competitive ultrashort pulse and broadband comb source architecture at the mid-infrared.

We study theoretically and experimentally the quantum properties of a type II frequency degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold with a quarter-wave plate inserted inside the cavity which induces a linear coupling between the orthogon ally polarized signal and idler fields. This original device provides a good insight into general properties of two-mode gaussian states, illustrated in terms of covariance matrix. We report on the experimental generation of two-mode squeezed vacuum on non-orthogonal quadratures depending on the plate angle. After a simple operation, the entanglement is maximized and put into standard form, textit{i.e.} quantum correlations and anti-correlations on orthogonal quadratures. A half-sum of squeezed variances as low as $0.33 pm 0.02$, well below the unit limit for inseparability, is obtained and the entanglement measured by the entropy of formation.
The influence of the phase fluctuation of the pump laser on the phase-correlation between the signal and idler modes of the output fields from as non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator operating above oscillation threshold was experimentally in vestigated. The noise spectra of the intensity-difference and the phase-sum of the entangled optical beams were measured with a pair of unbalanced fiber Match-Zehnder interferometers specifically designed. The experimental results proved the previously theoretical prediction and are in reasonable agreement with the calculation based on semiclassical theory involving the phase fluctuation of pump laser.
