We report the ultra-fast optical response of quasi-particles (QPs) in both the pseudogap (PG) and superconducting (SC) states of underdoped (UD) Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+delta}$ (Bi2212) single crystal measured with the time-resolved pump-probe technique. At a probe energy $hbaromega_{pr}$=1.55 eV, it is found that the reflectivity change $Delta$R/R changes its sign at exactly $T_{c}$, which allows the direct separation of the charge dynamics of PG and SC QPs. Further systematic investigations indicate that the transient signals associated with PG and SC QPs depend on the probe beam energy and polarization. By tuning them below $T_{c}$ two distinct components can be detected simultaneously, providing evidence for the coexistence of PG and SC QPs.

We use a spatially resolved, direct spectroscopic probe for electronic structure with an additional sensitivity to chemical compositions to investigate high-quality single crystal samples of La_{1/4}Pr_{3/8}Ca_{3/8}MnO_{3}, establishing the formation of distinct insulating domains embedded in the metallic host at low temperatures. These domains are found to be at least an order of magnitude larger in size compared to previous estimates and exhibit memory effects on temperature cycling in the absence of any perceptible chemical inhomogeneity, suggesting long-range strains as the probable origin.
We show that the superconducting energy gap $Delta$ can be directly observed in phonon spectra, as predicted by recent theories. In addition, since each phonon probes the gap on only a small part of the Fermi surface, the gap anisotropy can be studie d in detail. Our neutron scattering investigation of the anisotropic conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C demonstrates this new application of phonon spectroscopy.
The relation between pseudogap (PG) and superconducting (SC) gap, whether PG is a precursor of SC or they coexist or compete, is a long-standing controversy in cuprate high-temperature supercondutors. Here, we report ultrafast time-resolved optical r eflectivity investigation of the dynamic densities and relaxations of PG and SC quasiparticles (QPs) in the underdoped $rm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta}}$ ($T_c$ = 82 K) single crystals. We find evidence of two distinct PG components in the positive reflectivity changes in the PG state, characterized by relaxation timescales of $tau_{fast}$ $approx$ 0.2 ps and $tau_{slow}$ $approx$ 2 ps with abrupt changes in both amplitudes $A_{fast}$ and $A_{slow}$ at the PG-opening temperature $T^*$. The former presents no obvious change at $T_c$ and coexists with the SC QP. The latters amplitude starts decreasing at the SC phase fluctuation $T_p$ and vanishes at $T_c$ followed by a negative amplitude signifying the emergence of the SC QP, therefore suggesting a competition with superconductivity.

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the optimally-doped Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compound and determined the accurate momentum dependence of the superconducting (SC) gap in four Fermi-surface sheets i ncluding a newly discovered outer electron pocket at the M point. The SC gap on this pocket is nearly isotropic and its magnitude is comparable ($Delta$ $sim$ 11 meV) to that of the inner electron and hole pockets ($sim$12 meV), although it is substantially larger than that of the outer hole pocket ($sim$6 meV). The Fermi-surface dependence of the SC gap value is basically consistent with $Delta$($k$) = $Delta$$_0$cos$k_x$cos$k_y$ formula expected for the extended s-wave symmetry. The observed finite deviation from the simple formula suggests the importance of multi-orbital effects.

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the overdoped Ba$_{0.3}$K$_{0.7}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor ($T_c$ = 22 K). We demonstrate that the superconducting (SC) gap on each Fermi surface (FS) is nearly isotropic whereas the ga p value varies from 4.4 to 7.9 meV on different FSs. By comparing with under- and optimally-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, we find that the gap value on each FS nearly scales with $T_c$ over a wide doping range (0.25 $textyen leq$ $x$ $textyen leq$ 0.7). Although the FS volume and the SC gap magnitude are strongly doping dependent, the multiple nodeless gaps can be commonly fitted by a single gap function assuming pairing up to the second-nearest-neighbor, suggesting the universality of the short-range pairing states with the $s_{yenpm}$-wave symmetry.
