We study the quantum phases of bosons confined in a combined potential of a one-dimensional double-well optical lattice and a parabolic trap. We apply the time-evolving block decimation method to the corresponding two-legged Bose-Hubbard model. In the absence of a parabolic trap, the system of bosons in the double-well optical lattice exhibits a reentrant quantum phase transition between Mott insulator and superfluid phases at unit filling as the tilt of the double-wells is increased. We show that the reentrant phase transition occurs also in the presence of a parabolic trap and suggest that it can be detected in experiments by measuring the matter-wave interference pattern.

We study bosons in the first excited Bloch band of a double-well optical lattice, recently realized at NIST. By calculating the relevant parameters from a realistic nonseparable lattice potential, we find that in the most favorable cases the boson li fetime in the first excited band can be several orders of magnitude longer than the typical nearest-neighbor tunnelling timescales, in contrast to that of a simple single-well lattice. In addition, for sufficiently small lattice depths the excited band has minima at nonzero momenta incommensurate with the lattice period, which opens a possibility to realize an exotic superfluid state that spontaneously breaks the time-reversal, rotational, and translational symmetries. We discuss possible experimental signatures of this novel state.
We numerically investigate, using the time evolving block decimation algorithm, the quantum transport of ultra-cold bosonic atoms in a double well optical lattice through slow and periodic modulation of the lattice parameters (intra- and inter-well t unneling, chemical potential, etc.). The transport of atoms does not depend on the rate of change of the parameters (as along as the change is slow) and can distribute atoms in optical lattices at the quantized level without involving external forces. The transport of atoms depends on the atom filling in each double well and the interaction between atoms. In the strongly interacting region, the bosonic atoms share the same transport properties as non-interacting fermions with quantized transport at the half filling and no atom transport at the integer filling. In the weakly interacting region, the number of the transported atoms is proportional to the atom filling. We show the signature of the quantum transport from the momentum distribution of atoms that can measured in the time of flight image. A semiclassical transport model is developed to explain the numerically observed transport of bosonic atoms in the non-interacting and strongly interacting limits. The scheme may serve as an quantized battery for atomtronics applications.
We propose to realize one-dimensional topological phases protected by SU($N$) symmetry using alkali or alkaline-earth atoms loaded into a bichromatic optical lattice. We derive a realistic model for this system and investigate it theoretically. Depen ding on the parity of $N$, two different classes of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are stabilized at half-filling for physical parameters of the model. For even $N$, the celebrated spin-1 Haldane phase and its generalization to SU($N$) are obtained with no local symmetry breaking. In stark contrast, at least for $N=3$, a new class of SPT phases, dubbed chiral Haldane phases, that spontaneously break inversion symmetry, emerge with a two-fold ground-state degeneracy. The latter ground states with open-boundary conditions are characterized by different left and right boundary spins which are related by conjugation. Our results show that topological phases are within close reach of the latest experiments on cold fermions in optical lattices.

Ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices provide an ideal platform for exploring many-body physics of a large system arising from the coupling among a series of small identical systems whose few-body dynamics is exactly solvable. Using Landau-Zener (LZ) transition of bosonic atoms in double well optical lattices as an experimentally realizable model, we investigate such few to many body route by exploring the relation and difference between the small few-body (in one double well) and the large many-body (in double well lattice) non-equilibrium dynamics of cold atoms in optical lattices. We find the many-body coupling between double wells greatly enhances the LZ transition probability. The many-body dynamics in the double well lattice shares both similarity and difference from the few-body dynamics in one and two double wells. The sign of the on-site interaction plays a significant role on the many-body LZ transition. Various experimental signatures of the many-body LZ transition, including atom density, momentum distribution, and density-density correlation, are obtained.

We study quantum fluctuation driven first-order phase transitions of a two-species bosonic system in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Using effective potential method we find that the superfluid-Mott insulator phase transition of one type of boso ns can be changed from second-order to first-order by the quantum fluctuations of the other type of bosons. The study of the scaling behaviors near the quantum critical point shows that the first-order phase transition has a different universality from the second-order one. We also discuss the observation of this exotic phenomenon in the realistic cold-atom experiments.
