We introduce the log(Ha/[SII]6717+6731) vs. log(Ha/[NII]6583) (S2N2) diagnostic diagram as metallicity and ionisation parameter indicator for HII regions in external galaxies. The location of HII regions in the S2N2 diagram was studied both empirically and theoretically. We found that, for a wide range of metallicities, the S2N2 diagram gives single valued results in the metallicity-ionisation parameter plane. We demonstrate that the S2N2 diagram is a powerful tool to estimate metallicities of high-redshift (z ~ 2) HII galaxies. Finally, we derive the metallicity for 76 HII regions in M33 from the S2N2 diagram and calculate an O/H abundance gradient for this galaxy of -0.05 (+-0.01) dex kpc^-1.
We present a new determination of the metallicity gradient in M33, based on Keck/LRIS measurements of oxygen abundances using the temperature-sensitive emission line [OIII] 4363 A in 61 HII regions. These data approximately triple the sample of direc
In an XMM-Newton raster observation of the bright Local Group spiral galaxy M 33 we study the population of X-ray sources (X-ray binaries, supernova remnants) down to a 0.2--4.5 keV luminosity of 10^35 erg/s -- more than a factor of 10 deeper than ea
Does star formation proceed in the same way in large spirals such as the Milky Way and in smaller chemically younger galaxies? Earlier work suggests a more rapid transformation of H$_2$ into stars in these objects but (1) a doubt remains about the va
The relative abundance of the dust grain types in the interstellar medium (ISM) is directly linked to physical quantities that trace the evolution of galaxies. We study the dust properties of the whole disc of M33 at spatial scales of ~170 pc. This a
We present spectroscopic determinations of the effective temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities for 21 M-dwarfs observed at high-resolution (R $sim$ 22,500) in the textit{H}-band as part of the SDSS-IV APOGEE survey. The atmospheric parame
