Vibrational energy flows unevenly in molecules, repeatedly going back and forth between trapping and roaming. We identify bottlenecks between diffusive and chaotic behavior, and describe generic mechanisms of these transitions, taking the carbonyl sulphide molecule OCS as a case study. The bottlenecks are found to be lower-dimensional tori; their bifurcations and unstable manifolds govern the transition mechanisms.
We consider the evolution of fronts by mean curvature in the presence of obstacles. We construct a weak solution to the flow by means of a variational method, corresponding to an implicit time-discretization scheme. Assuming the regularity of the obs
Cross-jet transport of passive scalars in a kinematic model of the meandering laminar two-dimensional incompressible flow which is known to produce chaotic mixing is studied. We develop a method for detecting barriers to cross-jet transport in the ph
Red blood cells (RBCs) are the major component of blood and the flow of blood is dictated by that of RBCs. We employ vesicles, which consist of closed bilayer membranes enclosing a fluid, as a model system to study the behavior of RBCs under a confin
We continue our study of chaotic mixing and transport of passive particles in a simple model of a meandering jet flow [Prants, et al, Chaos {bf 16}, 033117 (2006)]. In the present paper we study and explain phenomenologically a connection between dyn
There have been many attempts to construct de Sitter space-times in string theory. While arguably there have been some successes, this has proven challenging, leading to the de Sitter swampland conjecture: quantum theories of gravity do not admit sta
