Galactic nuclei are well known sources of OH and H2O maser emission. It appears that intense star formation in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies drives most OH sources. In contrast, nuclear activity appears to drive most H2O sources. When H2O emission originates in accretion disk structures, constrained geometry and dynamics enable robust interpretation of spectroscopic and imaging data. The principal science includes study of AGN geometry at parsec and sub-parsec radii and measurement of geometric distances in the Hubble Flow. New high accuracy estimates of the Hubble constant, Ho, obtained from maser distances may enable new substantively improved constraints on fundamental cosmological parameters (e.g., dark energy).

We study in details a pumping mechanism for the lambda=1.35 cm maser transition 6_16 -> 5_23 in ortho-water based on the difference between gas and dust temperatures. The upper maser level is populated radiatively through 4_14 -> 5_05 and 5_05 -> 6_1 6 transitions. The heat sink is realized by absorbing the 45 mum photons, corresponding to the 5_23 -> 4_14 transition, by cold dust. We compute the inversion of maser level populations in the optically thick medium as a function of the hydrogen concentration, the gas-to-dust mass ratio, and the difference between the gas and the dust temperatures. The main results of numerical simulations are interpreted in terms of a simplified four-level model. We show that the maser strength depends mostly on the product of hydrogen concentration and the dust-to-water mass ratio but not on the size distribution of the dust particles or their type. We also suggest approximate formulae that describe accurately the inversion and can be used for fast calculations of the maser luminosity. Depending on the gas temperature, the maximum maser luminosity is reached when the water concentration N_water ~ 10^6-10^7 cm^-3 times the dust-to-hydrogen mass ratio, and the inversion completely disappears at density just an order of magnitude larger. For the dust temperature of 130 K, the 6_16 -> 5_23 transition becomes inverted already at the temperature difference of Delta T ~1 K, while other possible masing transitions require a larger Delta T > 30 K. We identify the region of the parameter space where other ortho- and para-water masing transitions can appear.
We present the first EVN maps of 6.7 GHz methanol masers of three high-mass protostar candidates selected from the Torun unbiased survey of the Galactic plane. A variety of linear and arc like structures was detected. A number of maser clusters with projected sizes of 20-100 AU show monotonic velocity gradients. Some of them are roughly perpendicular to the major axes of these structures and can arise behind shock fronts.

Using the 870-$mu$m APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL), we have identified 577 submillimetre continuum sources with masers from the methanol multibeam (MMB) survey in the region $280degr < ell < 20degr$; $|,b,| < 1.5degr$. 94,p er,cent of methanol masers in the region are associated with sub-millimetre dust emission. We estimate masses for ~450 maser-associated sources and find that methanol masers are preferentially associated with massive clumps. These clumps are centrally condensed, with envelope structures that appear to be scale-free, the mean maser position being offset from the peak column density by 0.0 pm 4. Assuming a Kroupa initial mass function and a star-formation efficiency of ~30,per,cent, we find that over two thirds of the clumps are likely to form clusters with masses >20,msun. Furthermore, almost all clumps satisfy the empirical mass-size criterion for massive star formation. Bolometric luminosities taken from the literature for ~100 clumps range between ~100 and 10$^6$,lsun. This confirms the link between methanol masers and massive young stars for 90,per,cent of our sample. The Galactic distribution of sources suggests that the star-formation efficiency is significantly reduced in the Galactic-centre region, compared to the rest of the survey area, where it is broadly constant, and shows a significant drop in the massive star-formation rate density in the outer Galaxy. We find no enhancement in source counts towards the southern Scutum-Centaurus arm tangent at $ell ~ 315degr$, which suggests that this arm is not actively forming stars.
In April 2002 an array of antennas operating at 129GHz successfully detected VLBI fringes on both continuum AGN and SiO maser sources. The 129GHz fringes on maser sources represent the highest frequency spectral line VLBI detections to date. The AGN 3C279 was detected on long baselines at both 129GHz (and at 147GHz, see Krichbaum et al in these proceedings) yielding fringe spacings of 50-56 micro arc seconds, an angular resolution record. The array consisted of the University of Arizona Kittpeak 12m antenna, the Heinrich Hertz 10m Telescope (HHT), and the IRAM 30m dish on Pico Veleta. At 129GHz, a number of evolved stars and several young stellar objects exhibit strong SiO maser emission in the v=1 J=3-2 transition. Preliminary cross power spectra of SiO masers around the red hypergiant VYCMa on the HHT-KittPeak baseline ~190km are consistent with multiple spatially separate maser spots associated with the star. Future observations will include continuum observations of the radio source at the Galactic Center, SgrA*, and higher frequency maser lines including HCN and methanol.
The relationship between active galactic nuclei activity and environment has been long discussed, but it is unclear if these relations extend into the dwarf galaxy mass regime -- in part due to the limits in both observations and simulations. We ai m to investigate if the merger histories and environments are significantly different between AGN and non-AGN dwarf galaxies in cosmological simulations, which may be indicative of the importance of these for AGN activity in dwarf galaxies, and whether these results are in line with observations. Using the IllustrisTNG flagship TNG100-1 run, 6,771 dwarf galaxies are found with 3,863 ($sim$57 per cent) having some level of AGN activity. In order to quantify `environment, two measures are used: 1) the distance to a galaxys 10th nearest neighbour at 6 redshifts and 2) the time since last merger for three different minimum merger mass ratios. A similar analysis is run on TNG50-1 and Illustris-1 to test for the robustness of the findings. Both measures yield significantly different distributions between AGN and non-AGN galaxies; more non-AGN than AGN galaxies have long term residence in dense environments while recent ($leq 4 text{ Gyr}$) minor mergers are more common for intermediate AGN activity. While no statements are made about the micro- or macrophysics from these results, it is nevertheless indicative of a non-neglible role of mergers and environments.
