We present a detailed analysis of the medium redshift (z=0.2906) galaxy cluster Z3146 which is part of the ongoing ARCRAIDER project, a systematic search for gravitational arcs in massive clusters of galaxies. The analysis of Z3146 is based on deep optical wide field observations in the B, V and R bands obtained with the [email protected], and shallow archival WFPC2@HST taken with the F606W filter, which are used for strong as well as weak lensing analyses. Additionally we have used publicly available XMM/Newton observations for a detailed X-ray analysis of Z3146. Both methods, lensing and X-ray, were used to determine the dynamical state and to estimate the total mass. We also identified four gravitational arc candidates. We find this cluster to be in a relaxed state, which is confirmed by a large cooling flow with nominal ~1600M_odot per year, regular galaxy density and light distributions and a regular shape of the weak lensing mass reconstruction. The mass content derived with the different methods agrees well within 25% at r_{200}=1661 h_{70}^{-1}kpc indicating a velocity dispersion of sigma_v=869^{+124}_{-153}km/s.

We report on a spatially resolved analysis of Chandra X-ray data on a nearby typical cooling flow cluster of galaxies 2A 0335+096, together with A 2199 for a comparison. As recently found in the cores of other clusters, the temperature around the cen tral part of 2A 0335+096 is 1.3--1.5 keV, which is higher than that inferred from the cooling flow picture. Furthermore, the absorption column density is almost constant against the radius in 2A 0335+096; there is no evidence of excess absorption up to 200--250 kpc. This indicates that no significant amount of cold material, which has cooled down, is present. These properties are similar to those of A 2199. Since the cooling time in the central part is much shorter than the age of the clusters, a heating mechanism, which weakens the effect of radiative cooling, is expected to be present in the central part of both clusters of galaxies. Both 2A 0335+096 and A 2199 have radio jets associated with their cD galaxy. We discuss the possibility of heating processes caused by these radio jets by considering the thermal conduction and the sound velocity together with the observed disturbance of the ICM temperature and density. We conclude that the observed radio jets can produce local heating and/or cooling, but do not sufficiently reduce the overall radiative cooling. This implies that much more violent jets, whose emission has now decayed, heated up the cooling gas $>10^9$ years ago.
We present a comparison of X-ray and optical luminosities and luminosity functions of cluster candidates from a joint optical/X-ray survey, the ROSAT Optical X-Ray Survey. Completely independent X-ray and optical catalogs of 23 ROSAT fields (4.8 deg2 ) were created by a matched-filter optical algorithm and by a wavelet technique in the X-ray. We directly compare the results of the optical and X-ray selection techniques. The matched-filter technique detected 74% (26 out of 35) of the most reliable cluster candidates in the X-ray-selected sample; the remainder could be either constellations of X-ray point sources or z>1 clusters. The matched-filter technique identified approximately 3 times the number of candidates (152 candidates) found in the X-ray survey of nearly the same sky (57 candidates). While the estimated optical and X-ray luminosities of clusters of galaxies are correlated, the intrinsic scatter in this relationship is very large. We can reproduce the number and distribution of optical clusters with a model defined by the X-ray luminosity function and by an LX Lambda cl relation if H0=75 km s-1 Mpc-1 and if the LX Lambda cl relation is steeper than the expected LX Lambda 2cl. On statistical grounds, a bimodal distribution of X-ray luminous and X-ray faint clusters is unnecessary to explain our observations. Follow-up work is required to confirm whether the clusters without bright X-ray counterparts are simply X-ray faint for their optical luminosity because of their low mass or youth or are a distinct population of clusters that do not, for some reason, have dense intracluster media. We suspect that these optical clusters are low-mass systems, with correspondingly low X-ray temperatures and luminosities, or that they are not yet completely virialized systems.
We present a Chandra observation of Abell 2052, a cooling flow cluster with a central cD that hosts the complex radio source 3C 317. The data reveal ``holes in the X-ray emission that are coincident with the radio lobes. The holes are surrounded by b right ``shells of X-ray emission. The data are consistent with the radio source displacing and compressing, and at the same time being confined by, the X-ray gas. The compression of the X-ray shells appears to have been relatively gentle and, at most, slightly transonic. The pressure in the X-ray gas (the shells and surrounding cooler gas) is approximately an order of magnitude higher than the minimum pressure derived for the radio source, suggesting that an additional source of pressure is needed to support the radio plasma. The compression of the X-ray shells has speeded up the cooling of the shells, and optical emission line filaments are found coincident with the brightest regions of the shells.
We report the first detailed X-ray and optical observations of the medium-distant cluster A33 obtained with the Beppo-SAX satellite and with the UH 2.2m and Keck II telescopes at Mauna Kea. The information deduced from X-ray and optical imaging and s pectroscopic data allowed us to identify the X-ray source 1SAXJ0027.2-1930 as the X-ray counterpart of the A33 cluster. The faint, $F_{2-10 keV} approx 2.4 times 10^{-13} ergscm2$, X-ray source 1SAXJ0027.2-1930, $sim 2$ arcmin away from the optical position of the cluster as given in the Abell catalogue, is identified with the central region of A33. Based on six cluster galaxy redshifts, we determine the redshift of A33, $z=0.2409$; this is lower than the value derived by Leir and Van Den Bergh (1977). The source X-ray luminosity, $L_{2-10 keV} = 7.7 times 10^{43} ergs$, and intracluster gas temperature, $T = 2.9$ keV, make this cluster interesting for cosmological studies of the cluster $L_X-T$ relation at intermediate redshifts. Two other X-ray sources in the A33 field are identified. An AGN at z$=$0.2274, and an M-type star, whose emission are blended to form an extended X-ray emission $sim 4$ arcmin north of the A33 cluster. A third possibly point-like X-ray source detected $sim 3$ arcmin north-west of A33 lies close to a spiral galaxy at z$=$0.2863 and to an elliptical galaxy at the same redshift as the cluster.
We present XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of X-ray clusters and groups of galaxies. We demonstrate the failure of the standard cooling-flow model to describe the soft X-ray spectrum of clusters of galaxies. We also emphasize several new developments in the study of the soft X-ray spectrum of cooling flows. Although there is some uncertainty in the expected mass deposition rate for any individual cluster, we show that high resolution RGS spectra robustly demonstrate that the expected line emission from the isobaric cooling-flow model is absent below 1/3 of the background temperature rather than below a fixed temperature in all clusters. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the best-resolved cluster spectra are inconsistent with the predicted shape of the differential luminosity distribution and the measured distribution is tilted to higher temperatures. These observations create several fine-tuning challenges for current theoretical explanations for the soft X-ray cooling-flow problem. Comparisons between these observations and other X-ray measurements are discussed.
