We estimate the spin relaxation rate due to spin-orbit coupling and acoustic phonon scattering in weakly-confined quantum dots with up to five interacting electrons. The Full Configuration Interaction approach is used to account for the inter-electron repulsion, and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings are exactly diagonalized. We show that electron-electron interaction strongly affects spin-orbit admixture in the sample. Consequently, relaxation rates strongly depend on the number of carriers confined in the dot. We identify the mechanisms which may lead to improved spin stability in few electron (>2) quantum dots as compared to the usual one and two electron devices. Finally, we discuss recent experiments on triplet-singlet transitions in GaAs dots subject to external magnetic fields. Our simulations are in good agreement with the experimental findings, and support the interpretation of the observed spin relaxation as being due to spin-orbit coupling assisted by acoustic phonon emission.

We show here the existence of the indirect coupling of electron and magnetic or nuclear ion spins in self-assembled quantum dots mediated by electron-electron interactions. With a single localized spin placed in the center of the dot, only the spins of electrons occupying the zero angular momentum states couple directly to the localized spin. We show that when the electron-electron interactions are included, the electrons occupying finite angular momentum orbitals interact with the localized spin. This effective interaction is obtained using exact diagonalization of the microscopic Hamiltonian as a function of the number of electronic shells, shell spacing, and anisotropy of the electron-Mn exchange interaction. The effective interaction can be engineered to be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic by tuning the parameters of the quantum dot.

We present a tunnel spectroscopy study of single PbS Quantum Dots (QDs) as function of temperature and gate voltage. Three distinct signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling are observed in the Electron Tunneling Spectrum (ETS) of these QDs. In t he shell-filling regime, the $8times$ degeneracy of the electronic levels is lifted by the Coulomb interactions and allows the observation of phonon sub-bands that result from the emission of optical phonons. At low bias, a gap is observed in the ETS that cannot be closed with the gate voltage, which is a distinguishing feature of the Franck-Condon (FC) blockade. From the data, a Huang-Rhys factor in the range $Ssim 1.7 - 2.5$ is obtained. Finally, in the shell tunneling regime, the optical phonons appear in the inelastic ETS $d^2I/dV^2$.
We present a numerical study of spin relaxation in a semiclassical electron ensemble in a large ballistic quantum dot. The dot is defined in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction system with a two-dimensional electron gas, and relaxation occurs due to Dressel haus and Rashba spin orbit interaction. We find that confinement in a micronscale dot can result in strongly enhanced relaxation with respect to a free two-dimensional electron ensemble, contrary to the established result that strong confinement or frequent momentum scattering reduces relaxation. This effect occurs when the size of the system is on the order of the spin precession length, but smaller than the mean free path.
We study acoustic-phonon-induced relaxation of charge excitations in single and tunnel-coupled quantum dots containing few confined interacting electrons. The Full Configuration Interaction approach is used to account for the electron-electron repuls ion. Electron-phonon interaction is accounted for through both deformation potential and piezoelectric field mechanisms. We show that electronic correlations generally reduce intradot and interdot transition rates with respect to corresponding single-electron transitions, but this effect is lessened by external magnetic fields. On the other hand, piezoelectric field scattering is found to become the dominant relaxation mechanism as the number of confined electrons increases. Previous proposals to strongly suppress electron-phonon coupling in properly designed single-electron quantum dots are shown to hold also in multi-electron devices. Our results indicate that few-electron orbital degrees of freedom are more stable than single-electron ones.
We propose a mechanism of energy relaxation for carriers confined in a non-polar quantum dot surrounded by an amorphous polar environment. The carrier transitions are due to their interaction with the oscillating electric field induced by the local v ibrations in the surrounding amorphous medium. We demonstrate that this mechanism controls energy relaxation for electrons in Si nanocrystals embedded in a SiO$_2$ matrix, where conventional mechanisms of electron-phonon interaction are not efficient.
