We propose an approach which allows to construct and use a potential function written in terms of an angle variable to describe interacting spin systems. We show how this can be implemented in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick, here considered a paradigmatic spin model. It is shown how some features of the energy gap can be interpreted in terms of a spin tunneling. A discrete Wigner function is constructed for a symmetric combination of two states of the model and its time evolution is obtained. The physical information extracted from that function reinforces our description of phase oscillations in a potential.

The sub-ohmic spin-boson model is known to possess a novel quantum phase transition at zero temperature between a localised and delocalised phase. We present here an analytical theory based on a variational ansatz for the ground state, which describe s a continuous localization transition with mean-field exponents for $0<s<0.5$. Our results for the critical properties show good quantitiative agreement with previous numerical results, and we present a detailed description of all the spin observables as the system passes through the transition. Analysing the ansatz itself, we give an intuitive microscopic description of the transition in terms of the changing correlations between the system and bath, and show that it is always accompanied by a divergence of the low-frequency boson occupations. The possible relevance of this divergence for some numerical approaches to this problem is discussed and illustrated by looking at the ground state obtained using density matrix renormalisation group methods.

We derive a time-convolutionless master equation for the spin-boson model in the weak coupling limit. The temporarily negative decay rates in the master equation indicate short time memory effects in the dynamics which is explicitly revealed when the dynamics is studied using the non-Markovian jump description. The approach gives new insight into the memory effects influencing the spin dynamics and demonstrates, how for the spin-boson model the the co-operative action of different channels complicates the detection of memory effects in the dynamics.
Through the introduction of a new electron spin transport mechanism, a 2D donor electron spin quantum computer architecture is proposed. This design addresses major technical issues in the original Kane design, including spatial oscillations in the e xchange coupling strength and cross-talk in gate control. It is also expected that the introduction of a degree of non-locality in qubit gates will significantly improve the scaling fault-tolerant threshold over the nearest-neighbour linear array.
We study quantum correlations in a bipartite heteronuclear $(N-1)times1$ system in an external magnetic field. The system consists of a spin ring with an arbitrary number $N-1$ of spins on the ring and one spin in its center. The spins on the ring ar e connected by secular dipole-dipole interactions and interact with the central spin through the Heisenberg $zz$-interaction. We show that the quantum discord, describing quantum correlations between the ring and the central spin, can be obtained analytically for this model in the high temperature approximation. The model allows us to find contributions of different parts of the spin-spin interactions to quantum correlations. We also investigate the evolution of quantum and classical correlations at different numbers of spins.
A scheme based on Coherent Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP) of exchange-only spin qubit quantum states in a linearly arranged double quantum dot chain is demonstrated. Logical states for the qubit are defined by adopting the spin state of three electrons confined in a double quantum dot. The possibility to obtain gate operations entirely with electrical manipulations makes this qubit a valuable architecture in the field of quantum computing for the implementation of quantum algorithms. The effect of the external control parameters as well as the effect of the dephasing on the coherent tunneling in the chain is studied. During adiabatic transport, within a constant energy degenerate eigenspace, the states in the double quantum dots internal to the chain are not populated, while transient populations of the mixed states in the external ones are predicted.
