The cross section of the pd -> 3He pi+ pi - reaction has been measured at the MOMO facility in a kinematically complete experiment at a c. m. excess energy of Q = 70 MeV. The energy and angular distributions show that the reaction is dominated by p-wave pi+ pi- pairs. This is in complete contrast to the results of inclusive measurements at somewhat higher energies which show a strong s-wave ABC enhancement at low pi pi masses. There are however indications of p-wave pion pairs from other experiments at low Q.

The production near threshold of isoscalar pion pairs in the pd -> 3He(pi pi)^0 reaction is estimated in a two-step model which successfully describes the production of eta, omega and eta mesons. A virtual pion beam, generated through an NN -> d pi r eaction on one of the nucleons in the deuteron, produces a second pion via a pi N -> pi pi N reaction on the other nucleon. Using the same scale factor as for heavy meson production, the model reproduces the total pi^0 pi^0 production rate determined at an excess energy of 37 MeV. There are some indications in the data for a suppression of events with low pi pi masses, as in the pi^- p -> pi^0 pi^0 n reaction, and this is confirmed within the model. The model suggests that a significant fraction of the charged pion production in the p d -> 3He pi^+ pi^- reaction at Q=70 MeV might be associated with isoscalar pion pairs, though this does not explain the strong dependence observed on the pi^+ pi^- relative momentum angle.
New experimental data on the pd -> 3He pi+ pi- reaction obtained with the COSY-MOMO detector below the three-pion threshold are presented. The reaction was also studied in inverse kinematics with a deuteron beam and the higher counting rates achieved were especially important at low excess energies. The comparison of these data with inclusive pd -> 3He+X rates allowed estimates also to be made of pi0 pi0 production. The results confirm our earlier findings that close to threshold there is no enhancement at low excitation energies in the pi+ pi- system, where the data seem largely suppressed compared to phase space. Possible explanations for this behavior, such as strong p- waves in the pi+pi- -system or the influence of two-step processes, are explored.
An exclusive measurement of the dd -> 3He n pi 0 reaction was carried at a beam momentum of p = 1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. For the first time data on the total cross section as well as differential distributions were obtained. The dat a are described with a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasi-free model and a partial wave expansion for three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be sigma(tot) = (2.89 +- 0.01(stat) +- 0.06(sys) +- 0.29(norm)) mu b. The contribution of the quasi-free processes (with the neutron being target or beam spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of the phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described within a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state.
The cross section for prompt neutral and charged three pion production in pp interactions was measured at excess energies in the range 160 - 217 MeV. That comprises the first measurement of the pp->pp pi0pi0pi0 reaction and the comparison with the pp ->pp pi+pi-pi0 reaction, in a very direct way. The experiment was performed above the eta meson production threshold and the cross section normalization was obtained from a concurrent measurement of the reaction pp->pp eta with the eta decaying into 3 pions. Since the same final states are selected, the measurement has a low systematical error. The measured cross section ratio sigma(pp->pp pi+pi-pi0)/sigma(pp->pp pi0pi0pi0) is compared to predictions of dominance of different isobars in the intermediate state.
We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an $eta$ meson and $^{3}hspace{-0.03cm}mbox{He}$ nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the $eta$-mesic nucleus decay, the $pdrightarrow$ $^{3}hspace {-0.03cm}mbox{He} 2gamma$ and $pdrightarrow$ $^{3}hspace{-0.03cm}mbox{He} 6gamma$ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of $eta$ meson bound in $^{3}hspace{-0.03cm}mbox{He}$ nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to an $^3$He-$eta$ nucleus width $Gamma$ above 20 MeV and binding energy $B_s$ between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the $eta$-mesic $^{3}hspace{-0.03cm}mbox{He}$ nucleus formation followed by the $eta$ meson decay which varies between $2$ nb and $15$ nb depending on possible bound state parameters.
