A systematic experimental study of inclusive pion double charge exchange in 4He has been undertaken. The reaction 4He(pi+,pi-)4p was observed at incident energies 120, 150, 180, 240 and 270 MeV; the 4He(pi-,pi+)4n reaction was observed at incident energies 180 and 240 MeV. At each incident energy, the doubly differential cross section was measured at three to five outgoing pion laboratory angles between 25 deg and 130 deg. At each angle, cross sections were measured over the range of outgoing pion energies from 10 MeV up to the kinematic limit for the reaction in which the final state consists of the oppositely charged pion plus four free nucleons. The spectra of outgoing pions are strikingly different from those observed for the inclusive double charge exchange reaction in heavier nuclei, but resemble those observed in the (pi-,pi+) reaction in 3He. The forward-angle spectra in the 3He and 4He reactions exhibit a prominent peak at high outgoing pion energies. Interpretation of the peaks in 3He (4He) as a three- (four-)nucleon resonance is ruled out by kinematic analysis. The results of a calculation, wherein the double charge exchange reaction is assumed to proceed as two sequential single charge exchange interactions, suggest that the high-energy peak is naturally explained by this double scattering mechanism. Non-static treatment of the pi-N interactions and the inclusion of nuclear binding effects appear to be important in reproducing the shape of the energy spectra at forward angles.

We report the results of a series of measurements of the differential cross sections for inclusive pion double charge exchange in 6,7Li, 9Be, and 12C for positive and negative incident pions of energies 120, 180, and 240 MeV. The data are compared wi th the predictions of an intranuclear cascade model and a model based on two sequential single charge exchange processes.
The inclusive pion double charge exchange (DCX) on oxygen nuclei has been measured in the region where additional pion production is kinematically forbidden. The experiment was performed at ITEP PS at incident pi- kinetic energies T_0= 0.59, 0.75 and 1.1 GeV. The integrated forward differential cross section was found to decrease with energy slowly. At 1.1 GeV it exceeds the theoretical prediction within the conventional sequential single charge exchange mechanism with a neutral pion in the intermediate state (Glauber elastic rescattering) by about half an order of magnitude. The sequential mechanism with two pions in the intermediate state (Glauber inelastic rescatterings), which was proposed recently, seems to be able to explain the observed slow energy dependence and allows to predict the DCX cross section for higher energies.

The fragmentation of the quasi-projectile is studied with the INDRA multidetector for different colliding systems and incident energies in the Fermi energy range. Different experimental observations show that a large part of the fragmentation is not compatible with the statistical fragmentation of a fully equilibrated nucleus. The study of internal correlations is a powerful tool, especially to evidence entrance channel effects. These effects have to be included in the theoretical descriptions of nuclear multifragmentation.
Observables in elastic proton-deuteron scattering are sensitive probes of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and three-nucleon force effects. The present experimental data base for this reaction is large, but contains a large discrepancy between data se ts for the differential cross section taken at 135 MeV/nucleon by two experimental research groups. This paper reviews the background of this problem and presents new data taken at KVI. Differential cross sections and analyzing powers for the $^{2}{rm H}(vec p,d){p}$ and ${rm H}(vec d,d){p}$ reactions at 135 MeV/nucleon and 65 MeV/nucleon, respectively, have been measured. The data differ significantly from previous measurements and consistently follow the energy dependence as expected from an interpolation of published data taken over a large range at intermediate energies.
Dielectron production in the $pi N$ interaction at not large energies is studied. The dominant contribution of the $Delta$-isobar creation in the intermediate state at incident pion momenta of about 0.3-0.4 GeV$/$c is shown. The experimental distribu tions over the angle and effective mass $M_{e^+e_-}$ of the $e^+e^-$ pair are described satisfactorily. This stimulated us to present theoretical predictions for the $M_{e^+e_-}$ distribution in the process $pi^- prightarrow ne^+e^-$ at different incident momenta, which could be verified, for example, by the HADES experiments.
