We report the experimental characterization of domain walls dynamics in a photorefractive resonator in a degenerate four wave mixing configuration. We show how the non flat profile of the emitted field affects the velocity of domain walls as well as the variations of intensity and phase gradient during their motion. We find a clear correlation between these two last quantities that allows the experimental determination of the chirality that governs the domain walls dynamics.

Hydrodynamic instabilities often cause spatio-temporal pattern formations and transitions between them. We investigate a model experimental system, a density oscillator, where the bifurcation from a resting state to an oscillatory state is triggered by the increase in the density difference of the two fluids. Our results show that the oscillation amplitude increases from zero and the period decreases above a critical density difference. The detailed data close to the bifurcation point provide a critical exponent consistent with the supercritical Hopf bifurcation.

The theory of optical dispersive shocks generated in propagation of light beams through photorefractive media is developed. Full one-dimensional analytical theory based on the Whitham modulation approach is given for the simplest case of sharp step-l ike initial discontinuity in a beam with one-dimensional strip-like geometry. This approach is confirmed by numerical simulations which are extended also to beams with cylindrical symmetry. The theory explains recent experiments where such dispersive shock waves have been observed.

The nonlinear dynamics of a transverse domain wall (TDW) in Permalloy and Nickel nanostrips with two artificially patterned pinning centers is studied numerically up to rf frequencies. The phase diagram frequency - driving amplitude shows a rich vari ety of dynamical behaviors depending on the material parameters and the type and shape of pinning centers. We find that T-shaped traps (antinotches) create a classical double well Duffing potential that leads to a small chaotic region in the case of Nickel and a large one for Py. In contrast, the rectangular constrictions (notches) create an exponential potential that leads to larger chaotic regions interspersed with periodic windows for both Py and Ni. The influence of temperature manifests itself by enlarging the chaotic region and activating thermal jumps between the pinning sites while reducing the depinning field at low frequency in the notched strips.

In order to later find explicit analytic solutions, we investigate the singularity structure of a fundamental model of nonlinear optics, the four-wave mixing model in one space variable z. This structure is quite similar, and this is not a surprise, to that of the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. The main result is that, in order to be single valued, time-dependent solutions should depend on the space-time coordinates through the reduced variable xi=sqrt{z} exp(-t / tau), in which tau is the relaxation time.

The theory of nonlinear diffraction of intensive light beams propagating through photorefractive media is developed. Diffraction occurs on a reflecting wire embedded in the nonlinear medium at relatively small angle with respect to the direction of t he beam propagation. It is shown that this process is analogous to the generation of waves by a flow of a superfluid past an obstacle. The ``equation of state of such a superfluid is determined by the nonlinear properties of the medium. On the basis of this hydrodynamic analogy, the notion of the ``Mach number is introduced where the transverse component of the wave vector plays the role of the fluid velocity. It is found that the Mach cone separates two regions of the diffraction pattern: inside the Mach cone oblique dark solitons are generated and outside the Mach cone the region of ``ship waves is situated. Analytical theory of ``ship waves is developed and two-dimensional dark soliton solutions of the equation describing the beam propagation are found. Stability of dark solitons with respect to their decay into vortices is studied and it is shown that they are stable for large enough values of the Mach number.
