We illustrate how to compute asymptotic interactions between discrete solitary waves of dispersive equations, using the approach proposed by Manton [Nucl. Phys. B 150, 397 (1979)]. We also discuss the complications arising due to discreteness and showcase the application of the method in nonlinear Schrodinger, as well as in Klein-Gordon lattices, finding excellent agreement with direct numerical computations.

We derive an asymptotic formula for the amplitude distribution in a fully nonlinear shallow-water solitary wave train which is formed as the long-time outcome of the initial-value problem for the Su-Gardner (or one-dimensional Green-Naghdi) system. O ur analysis is based on the properties of the characteristics of the associated Whitham modulation system which describes an intermediate undular bore stage of the evolution. The resulting formula represents a non-integrable analogue of the well-known semi-classical distribution for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, which is usually obtained through the inverse scattering transform. Our analytical results are shown to agree with the results of direct numerical simulations of the Su-Gardner system. Our analysis can be generalised to other weakly dispersive, fully nonlinear systems which are not necessarily completely integrable.
Asymptotic reductions of a defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schr{o}dinger model in $(3+1)$-dimensions, in both Cartesian and cylindrical geometry, are presented. First, at an intermediate stage, a Boussinesq equation is derived, and then its far-field, in the form of a variety of Kadomtsev-Petviashvilli (KP) equations for right- and left-going waves, is found. KP models includ
We study localized solutions for the nonlinear graph wave equation on finite arbitrary networks. Assuming a large amplitude localized initial condition on one node of the graph, we approximate its evolution by the Duffing equation. The rest of the ne twork satisfies a linear system forced by the excited node. This approximation is validated by reducing the nonlinear graph wave equation to the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation and by Fourier analysis. Finally, we examine numerically the condition for localization in the parameter plane, coupling versus amplitude and show that the localization amplitude depends on the maximal normal eigenfrequency.

We explore the statistical behavior of the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We find a parameter region where the system evolves towards a state characterized by a finite density of breathers and a negative temperature. Such a state is metast able but the convergence to equilibrium occurs on astronomical time scales and becomes increasingly slower as a result of a coarsening processes. Stationary negative-temperature states can be experimentally generated via boundary dissipation or from free expansions of wave packets initially at positive temperature equilibrium.
Discrete breathers, or intrinsic localized modes, are spatially localized, time--periodic, nonlinear excitations that can exist and propagate in systems of coupled dynamical units. Recently, some experiments show the sighting of a form of discrete br eather that exist at the atomic scale in a magnetic solid. Other observations of breathers refer to systems such as Josephson--junction arrays, photonic crystals and optical-switching waveguide arrays. All these observations underscore their importance in physical phenomena at all scales. The authors review some of their latest theoretical contributions in the field of classical and quantum breathers, with possible applications to these widely different physical systems and to many other such as DNA, proteins, quantum dots, quantum computing, etc.
