In an earlier work it was shown that the IR singularities arising in the nonplanar one loop two point function of a noncommutative ${cal N}=2$ gauge theory can be reproduced exactly from the massless closed string exchanges. The noncommutative gauge theory is realised on a fractional $D_3$ brane localised at the fixed point of the $C^2/Z_2$ orbifold. In this paper we identify the contributions from each of the closed string modes. The sum of these adds upto the nonplanar two-point function.

We study closed string exchanges in background $B$-field. By analysing the two point one loop amplitude in bosonic string theory, we show that tree-level exchange of lowest lying, tachyonic and massless closed string modes, have IR singularities simi lar to those of the nonplanar sector in noncommutative gauge theories. We further isolate the contributions from each of the massless modes. We interpret these results as the manifestation of open/closed string duality, where the IR behaviour of the boundary noncommutative gauge theory is reconstructed from the bulk theory of closed strings.
It was shown in [hep-th/0503009], in the context of bosonic theory that the IR singular terms that arise as a result of integrating out high momentum modes in nonplanar diagrams of noncommutative gauge theory can be recovered from low lying tree-leve l closed string exchanges. This follows as a natural consequence of world-sheet open-closed string duality. Here using the same setup we study the phenomenon for noncommutative ${cal N}=2$ gauge theory realised on a $D_3$ fractional brane localised at the fixed point of $C^2/Z_2$. The IR singularities from the massless closed string exchanges are exactly equal to those coming from one-loop gauge theory. This is as a result of cancellation of all contributions from the massive modes.
We develop a new background independent Moyal star formalism in bosonic open string field theory. The new star product is formulated in a half-phase-space, and because phase space is independent of any background fields, the interactions are backgrou nd independent. In this basis there is a large amount of symmetry, including a supersymmetry OSp(d|2) that acts on matter and ghost degrees of freedom, and simplifies computations. The BRST operator that defines the quadratic kinetic term of string field theory may be regarded as the solution of the equation of motion A*A=0 of a purely cubic background independent string field theory. We find an infinite number of non-perturbative solutions to this equation, and are able to associate them to the BRST operator of conformal field theories on the worldsheet. Thus, the background emerges from a spontaneous-type breaking of a purely cubic highly symmetric theory. The form of the BRST field breaks the symmetry in a tractable way such that the symmetry continues to be useful in practical perturbative computations as an expansion around some background. The new Moyal basis is called the $sigma $-basis, where $sigma$ is the worldsheet parameter of an open string. A vital part of the new star product is a natural and crucially needed mid-point regulator in this continuous basis, so that all computations are finite. The regulator is removed after renormalization and then the theory is finite only in the critical dimension. Boundary conditions for D-branes at the endpoints of the string are naturally introduced and made part of the theory as simple rules in algebraic computations. A byproduct of our approach is an astonishing suggestion of the formalism: the roots of ordinary quantum mechanics may originate in the rules of non-commutative interactions in string theory.
In this paper we study the zero energy solutions of the Dirac equation in the background of a $Z_2$ vortex of a non-Abelian gauge model with three charged scalar fields. We determine the number of the fermionic zero modes giving their explicit form for two specific Ansatze.
We clarify some aspects of the map between the c=1 string theory at self-dual radius and the topologically twisted cigar at level one. We map the ZZ and FZZT D-branes in the c=1 string theory at self dual radius to the localized and extended branes i n the topological theory on the cigar. We show that the open string spectrum on the branes in the two theories are in correspondence with each other, and their two point correlators are equal. We also find a representation of an extended N=2 algebra on the worldsheet which incorporates higher spin currents in terms of asymptotic variables on the cigar.
