We review the status of lattice calculations of the deep-inelastic structure functions of the nucleon. In addition, we present some results on the pion and rho structure functions.

We sketch the basic ideas of the lattice regularization in Quantum Field Theory, the corresponding Monte Carlo simulations, and applications to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This approach enables the numerical measurement of observables at the non-pe rturbative level. We comment on selected results, with a focus on hadron masses and the link to Chiral Perturbation Theory. At last we address two outstanding issues: topological freezing and the sign problem.

Recent progress in lattice QCD calculations of nucleon structure will be presented. Calculations of nucleon matrix elements and form factors have long been difficult to reconcile with experiment, but with advances in both methodology and computing re sources, this situation is improving. Some calculations have produced agreement with experiment for key observables such as the axial charge and electromagnetic form factors, and the improved understanding of systematic errors will help to increase confidence in predictions of unmeasured quantities. The long-omitted disconnected contributions are now seeing considerable attention and some recent calculations of them will be discussed.
The structure of neutrons, protons, and other strongly interacting particles is now being calculated in full, unquenched lattice QCD with quark masses entering the chiral regime. This talk describes selected examples, including the nucleon axial char ge, structure functions, electromagnetic form factors, the origin of the nucleon spin, the transverse structure of the nucleon, and the nucleon to Delta transition form factor.
We present the first direct lattice calculation of the isovector sea-quark parton distributions using the formalism developed recently by one of the authors. We use $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ lattice gauge ensembles (generated by MILC Collaboration) and clover valence fermions with pion mass 310 MeV. We are able to obtain the qualitative features of the nucleon sea flavor structure even at this large pion mass: We observe violation of the Gottfried sum rule, indicating $overline{d}(x) > overline{u}(x)$; the helicity distribution obeys $Delta overline{u}(x) > Delta overline{d}(x)$, which is consistent with the STAR data at large and small leptonic pseudorapidity.

We review our present knowledge of the Polyakov loop, the correlator of Polyakov loops and the singlet correlator in thermal QCD from the point of view of perturbation theory and lattice QCD.
