The strong K^- p scattering length is extracted within chiral SU(3) unitary approaches from a very large variety of fits to low-energy K^- p scattering data. Very good overall agreement with available scattering data is obtained and the resulting scattering length is compared with the new accurate kaonic hydrogen data from DEAR. The pole structures of the obtained fits to experiment are critically examined.

The results of a recent experiment measuring the reaction pp -> dK^+ bar K^0 near threshold are interpreted in terms of a spectator model that encapsulates the main features of the observed K^+ bar K^0 invariant mass distribution. A chi^2 fit to this data leads to an imaginary part of the isovector scattering length in the K bar K channel of Im(a_1) = -(0.63 pm 0.24) fm. We then use the Flatte representation of the scattering amplitude to infer a value Re(a_1) = -(0.02 pm 0.02) fm for the real part under the assumption that scaling is approximately satisfied. We show further that it is not possible to exclude the effects of pi^+eta to K^+ bar K^0 channel coupling within the context of our model.

The quality of the recent GlueX $J/psi $ photoproduction data from Hall~D at Jefferson Laboratory, and the proximity of the data to the energy threshold, gives access to a variety of interesting physics aspects. As an example, an estimation of the $J /psi$-nucleon scattering length $alpha_{J/psi p}$ is provided within the vector meson dominance model. It results in $|alpha_{J/psi p}| = (3.08pm 0.55 ({rm stat.}) pm 0.45 ({rm syst.}))$~mfm.
After having announced the statistically significant observation (5.6~$sigma$) of the new exotic $pi K$ atom, the DIRAC experiment at the CERN proton synchrotron presents the measurement of the corresponding atom lifetime, based on the full $pi K$ da ta sample: $tau = (5.5^{+5.0}_{-2.8}) cdot 10^{-15}s$. By means of a precise relation ($<1%$) between atom lifetime and scattering length, the following value for the S-wave isospin-odd $pi K$ scattering length $a_0^{-}~=~frac{1}{3}(a_{1/2}-a_{3/2})$ has been derived: $left|a_0^-right| = (0.072^{+0.031}_{-0.020}) M_{pi}^{-1}$.
Interesting theories with short range interactions include QCD in the hadronic phase and cold atom systems. The scattering length in two-to-two elastic scattering process captures the most elementary features of the interactions, such as whether they are attractive or repulsive. However, even this basic quantity is notoriously difficult to compute from first principles in strongly coupled theories. We present a method to compute the two-to-two amplitudes and the scattering length using the holographic duality. Our method is based on the identification of the residues of Greens functions in the gravity dual with the amplitudes in the field theory. To illustrate the method we compute a contribution to the scattering length in a hard wall model with a quartic potential and find a constraint on the scaling dimension of a scalar operator $Delta > d/4$. For $d< 4$ this is more stringent than the unitarity constraint and may be applicable to an extended family of large-$N$ theories with a discrete spectrum of massive states. We also argue that for scalar potentials with polynomial terms of order $K$, a constraint more restrictive than the unitarity bound will appear for $d<2K/(K-2)$.
The $J/psi$-$p$ scattering length, $alpha_{J/psi p}$, can be extracted from the $J/psi$ photoproduction cross section near threshold using the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model to relate the reaction $gamma p to J/psi p$ to $J/psi p to J/psi p$. Suc h estimates based on experimental data result in values for $|alpha_{J/psi p}|$, which are much lower than most of the theoretical predictions. In this work, we study the relations between the different results, depending on the use of the total or the differential cross sections, and the method of extrapolating the data to threshold in the case of a low-statistics data sample, such as the near threshold $J/psi$ photoproduction dataset. We estimate a range for $|alpha_{J/psi p}|$ of $0.003$ to $0.025$~fm as extracted from experimental data within the VMD model and discuss possible reasons for such lower values compared to the theoretical results.
