We perform a numerical test of a relativistic heavy quark(RHQ) action, recently proposed by Tsukuba group, in quenched lattice QCD at $asimeq 0.1$ fm. With the use of the improvement parameters previously determined at one-loop level for the RHQ action, we investigate a restoration of rotational symmetry for heavy-heavy and heavy-light meson systems around the charm quark mass. We focused on two quantities, the meson dispersion relation and the pseudo-scalar meson decay constants. It is shown that the RHQ action significantly reduces the discretization errors due to the charm quark mass. We also calculate the S-state hyperfine splittings for the charmonium and charmed-strange mesons and the $D_s$ meson decay constant. The remaining discretization errors in the physical quantities are discussed.

We compute charm and bottom quark masses in the quenched approximation and in the continuum limit of lattice QCD. We make use of a step scaling method, previously introduced to deal with two scale problems, that allows to take the continuum limit of the lattice data. We determine the RGI quark masses and make the connection to the MSbar scheme. The continuum extrapolation gives us a value m_b^{RGI} = 6.73(16) GeV for the b-quark and m_c^{RGI} = 1.681(36) GeV for the c-quark, corresponding respectively to m_b^{MSbar}(m_b^{MSbar}) = 4.33(10) GeV and m_c^{MSbar}(m_c^{MSbar}) = 1.319(28) GeV. The latter result, in agreement with current estimates, is for us a check of the method. Using our results on the heavy quark masses we compute the mass of the Bc meson, M_{Bc} = 6.46(15) GeV.
We calculate the masses of bottom mesons using an improved relativistic action for the b-quarks and the RBC/UKQCD Iwasaki gauge configurations with 2+1 flavors of dynamical domain-wall light quarks. We analyze configurations with two lattice spacings : a^{-1} = 1.729 GeV (a ~ 0.11 fm) and a^{-1} = 2.281 GeV (a ~ 0.086 fm). We use an anisotropic, clover-improved Wilson action for the b-quark, and tune the three parameters of the action nonperturbatively such that they reproduce the experimental values of the B_s and B_s* heavy-light meson states. The masses and mass-splittings of the low-lying bottomonium states (such as the eta_b and Upsilon) can then be computed with no additional inputs, and comparison between these predictions and experiment provides a test of the validity of our method. We obtain bottomonium masses with total uncertainties of ~0.5-0.6% and fine-structure splittings with uncertainties of ~35-45%; for all cases we find good agreement with experiment. The parameters of the relativistic heavy-quark action tuned for b-quarks presented in this work can be used for precise calculations of weak matrix elements such as B-meson decay constants and mixing parameters with lattice discretization errors that are of the same size as in light pseudoscalar meson quantities. This general method can also be used for charmed meson masses and matrix elements if the parameters of the heavy-quark action are appropriately tuned.
We present a study for the pion decay constant $f_pi$ in the quenched approximation to lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind (KS) quark action, with the emphasis given to the renormalization problems. Numerical simulations are carried out at the coupli ngs $beta = 6.0$ and 6.2 on $32^3times 64$ and $48^3times 64$ lattices, respectively. The pion decay constant is evaluated for all KS flavors via gauge invariant and non-invariant axial vector currents with the renormalization constants calculated by both non-perturbative method and perturbation theory. We obtain $f_pi = 89(6)$ MeV in the continuum limit as the best value using the partially conserved axial vector current, which requires no renormalization. From a study for the other KS flavors we find that the results obtained with the non-perturbative renormalization constants are well convergent among the KS flavors in the continuum limit, confirming restoration of $rm SU(4)_A$ flavor symmetry, while perturbative renormalization still leaves an apparent flavor breaking effect even in the continuum limit.

The free energy between a static quark and an antiquark is studied by using the color-singlet Polyakov-line correlation at finite temperature in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors of improved Wilson quarks. From the simulations on $32^3 times 12$, 10, 8, 6 , 4 lattices in the high temperature phase, based on the fixed scale approach, we find that, the heavy-quark free energies at short distance converge to the heavy-quark potential evaluated from the Wilson loop at zero temperature, in accordance with the expected insensitivity of short distance physics to the temperature. At long distance, the heavy-quark free energies approach to twice the single-quark free energies, implying that the interaction between heavy quarks is screened. The Debye screening mass obtained from the long range behavior of the free energy is compared with the results of thermal perturbation theory.
We study the end point of the first-order deconfinement phase transition in two and 2+1 flavor QCD in the heavy quark region of the quark mass parameter space. We determine the location of critical point at which the first-order deconfinement phase t ransition changes to crossover, and calculate the pseudo-scalar meson mass at the critical point. Performing quenched QCD simulations on lattices with the temporal extents Nt=6 and 8, the effects of heavy quarks are determined using the reweighting method. We adopt the hopping parameter expansion to evaluate the quark determinants in the reweighting factor. We estimate the truncation error of the hopping parameter expansion by comparing the results of leading and next-to-leading order calculations, and study the lattice spacing dependence as well as the spatial volume dependence of the result for the critical point. The overlap problem of the reweighting method is also examined. Our results for Nt=4 and 6 suggest that the critical quark mass decreases as the lattice spacing decreases and increases as the spatial volume increases.
