We have continued our systematic investigations of the numerical simulations of lattice gauge theories in the dual formulation. These include: i) a more practical implementation of the quasi-local updating technique, ii) a thorough investigation of the sign problem, iii) issues related to the ergodicity of the various update algorithms, iv) a novel way of measuring conventional observables like plaquette in the dual formalism and v) investigations of thermalisation. While the dual formulation holds out a lot of promises in principle, there are still some ways to go before it can be made into an attractive alternative lattice formulation.

The extreme anisotropic limit of Euclidean SU(3) lattice gauge theory is examined to extract the Hamiltonian limit, using standard path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) methods. We examine the mean plaquette and string tension and compare them to results obtained within the Hamiltonian framework of Kogut and Susskind. The results are a significant improvement upon previous Hamiltonian estimates, despite the extrapolation procedure necessary to extract observables. We conclude that the PIMC method is a reliable method of obtaining results for the Hamiltonian version of the theory. Our results also clearly demonstrate the universality between the Hamiltonian and Euclidean formulations of lattice gauge theory. It is particularly important to take into account the renormalization of both the anisotropy, and the Euclidean coupling $ beta_E $, in obtaining these results.
A `forward walking Greens Function Monte Carlo algorithm is used to obtain expectation values for SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory in (3+1) dimensions. The ground state energy and Wilson loops are calculated, and the finite-size scaling behaviour is e xplored. Crude estimates of the string tension are derived, which agree with previous results at intermediate couplings; but more accurate results for larger loops will be required to establish scaling behaviour at weak coupling.
We study an SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=8 degenerate flavors of light fermions in the fundamental representation. Using the domain wall fermion formulation, we investigate the light hadron spectrum, chiral condensate and electroweak S parameter. We co nsider a range of light fermion masses on two lattice volumes at a single gauge coupling chosen so that IR scales approximately match those from our previous studies of the two- and six-flavor systems. Our results for the Nf=8 spectrum suggest spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, though fits to the fermion mass dependence of spectral quantities do not strongly disfavor the hypothesis of mass-deformed infrared conformality. Compared to Nf=2 we observe a significant enhancement of the chiral condensate relative to the symmetry breaking scale F, similar to the situation for Nf=6. The reduction of the S parameter, related to parity doubling in the vector and axial-vector channels, is also comparable to our six-flavor results.
We systematically compare filtering methods used to extract topological excitations from lattice gauge configurations. We show that there is a strong correlation of the topological charge densities obtained by APE and Stout smearing. Furthermore, a f irst quantitative analysis of quenched and dynamical configurations reveals a crucial difference of their topological structure: the topological charge density is more fragmented, when dynamical quarks are present. This fact also implies that smearing has to be handled with great care, not to destroy these characteristic structures.
We compute chromoelectric and chromomagnetic flux densities for hybrid static potentials in SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory. In addition to the ordinary static potential with quantum numbers $Lambda_eta^epsilon = Sigma_g^+$, we present numerical results for seven hybrid static potentials corresponding to $Lambda_eta^{(epsilon)} = Sigma_u^+, Sigma_g^-, Sigma_u^-, Pi_g, Pi_u, Delta_g, Delta_u$, where the flux densities of five of them are studied for the first time in this work. We observe hybrid static potential flux tubes, which are significantly different from that of the ordinary static potential. They are reminiscent of vibrating strings, with localized peaks in the flux densities that can be interpreted as valence gluons.
