We obtain observational upper bounds on a class of quantum gravity related birefringence effects, by analyzing the presence of linear polarization in the optical and ultraviolet spectrum of some distant sources. In the notation of Gambini and Pullin we find $chi < 10^{-3}$.

The coupling of the electromagnetic field directly with gravitational gauge fields leads to new physical effects that can be tested using astronomical data. Here we consider a particular case for closer scrutiny, a specific nonminimal coupling of tor sion to electromagnetism, which enters into a metric-affine geometry of space-time. We show that under the assumption of this nonminimal coupling, spacetime is birefringent in the presence of such a gravitational field. This leads to the depolarization of light emitted from extended astrophysical sources. We use polarimetric data of the magnetic white dwarf ${RE J0317-853}$ to set strong constraints on the essential coupling constant for this effect, giving $k^2 lsim (19 {m})^2 $.

We give precise details to support that observations of gravitational lensing at scales of individual, groups and clusters of galaxies can be understood in terms of non-Newtonian gravitational interactions with a relativistic structure compatible wit h the Einstein Equivalence Principle. This result is derived on very general grounds without knowing the underlying structure of the gravitational field equations. As such, any developed gravitational theory built to deal with these astrophysical scales needs to reproduce the obtained results of this article.
We study the properties of compact objects in a particular 4D Horndeski theory originating from higher dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Remarkably, an exact vacuum solution is known. This compact object differs from general relativity mostl y in the strong field regime. We discuss some properties of black holes in this framework and investigate in detail the properties of neutron stars, both static and in slow rotation. We find that for relatively modest deviations from general relativity, the secondary object in GW190814 is compatible with being a slowly-rotating neutron star, without resorting to very stiff or exotic equations of state. For larger deviations from general relativity, the equilibrium sequence of neutron stars matches asymptotically to the black hole limit, closing the mass gap between neutron stars and black holes of same radius, but the stability of equilibrium solutions has yet to be determined. In light of our results and of current observational constraints, we discuss specific constraints on the coupling constant that parametrizes deviations from general relativity in this theory.

Fourth-derivative gravity has two free parameters, $alpha$ and $beta$, which couple the curvature-squared terms $R^2$ and $R_{mu u}^2$. Relativistic effects and short-range laboratory experiments can be used to provide upper limits to these constants . In this work we briefly review both types of experimental results in the context of higher-derivative gravity. The strictest limit follows from the second kind of test. Interestingly enough, the bound on $beta$ due to semiclassical light deflection at the solar limb is only one order of magnitude larger.

EPR-type measurements on spatially separated entangled spin qubits allow one, in principle, to detect curvature. Also the entanglement of the vacuum state is affected by curvature. Here, we ask if the curvature of spacetime can be expressed entirely in terms of the spatial entanglement structure of the vacuum. This would open up the prospect that quantum gravity could be simulated on a quantum computer and that quantum information techniques could be fully employed in the study of quantum gravity.
