We perform a two-dimensional molecular-dynamics study of a model for sheared bidisperse granular systems under conditions of simple shear and Poiseuille flow. We propose a mechanism for particle-size segregation based on the observation that segregation occurs if the viscous length scale introduced by a liquid in the system is smaller than of the order of the particle size. We show that the ratio of shear rate to viscosity must be small if one wants to find size segregation. In this case the particles in the system arrange themselves in bands of big and small particles oriented along the direction of the flow. Similarly, in Poiseuille flow we find the formation of particle bands. Here, in addition, the variety of time scales in the flow leads to an aggregation of particles in the zones of low shear rate and can suppress size segregation in these regions. The results have been verified against simulations using a full Navier-Stokes description for the liquid.

We report an experimental study of a binary sand bed under an oscillating water flow. The formation and evolution of ripples is observed. The appearance of a granular segregation is shown to strongly depend on the sand bed preparation. The initial wa velength of the mixture is measured. In the final steady state, a segregation in volume is observed instead of a segregation at the surface as reported before. The correlation between this phenomenon and the fluid flow is emphasised. Finally, different ``exotic patterns and their geophysical implications are presented.
We study by means of molecular dynamics simulations of periodic shear cells, the influence of particle shape on the global mechanical behavior of dense granular media. Results at macro-mechanical level show that for large shear deformation samples wi th elongated particles, independent of their initial orientation, reach the same stationary value for both shear force and void ratio. At the micro-mechanical level the stress, the fabric and the inertia tensors of the particles are used to study the evolution of the media. In the case of isotropic particles the direction of the principal axis of the fabric tensor is aligned with the one of the principal stress, while for elongated particles the fabric orientation is strongly dependent on the orientation of the particles. The shear band width is shown to depend on the particle shape due to the tendency of elongated particles to preferential orientations and less rotation.

We investigate the segregation of a dense binary mixture of granular particles that only differ in their restitution coefficient. The mixture is vertically vibrated in the presence of gravity. We find a partial segregation of the species, where most dissipative particles submerge in the less dissipative ones. The segregation occurs even if one type of the particles is elastic. In order to have a complete description of the system, we study the structure of the fluid at microscopic scale (few particle diameters). The density and temperature pair distribution functions show strong enhancements respect the equilibrium ones at the same density. In particular, there is an increase in the probability that the more inelastic particles group together in pairs (microsegregation). Microscopically the segregation is buoyancy driven, by the appearance of a dense and cold region around the more inelastic particles.
We study the influence of particle shape anisotropy on the occurrence of avalanches in sheared granular media. We use molecular dynamic simulations to calculate the relative movement of two tectonic plates. % with transform boundaries. Our model cons iders irregular polygonal particles constituting the material within the shear zone. We find that the magnitude of the avalanches is approximately independent on particle shape and in good agreement with the Gutenberg-Richter law, but the aftershock sequences are strongly influenced by the particle anisotropy yielding variations on the exponent characterizing the empirical Omoris law. Our findings enable one to identify the presence of anisotropic particles at the macro-mechanical level only by observing the avalanche sequences of real faults. In addition, we calculate the probability of occurrence of an avalanche for given values of stiffness or frictional strength and observe also a significant influence of the particle anisotropy.
We present results from a series of experiments on a granular medium sheared in a Couette geometry and show that their statistical properties can be computed in a quantitative way from the assumption that the resultant from the set of forces acting i n the system performs a Brownian motion. The same assumption has been utilised, with success, to describe other phenomena, such as the Barkhausen effect in ferromagnets, and so the scheme suggests itself as a more general description of a wider class of driven instabilities.
