Coherent acoustic radial oscillations of thin spherical gold shells of submicron diameter excited by an ultrashort optical pulse are observed in the form of pronounced modulations of the transient reflectivity on a subnanosecond time scale. Strong acousto-optical coupling in a photonic crystal enhances the modulation of the transient reflectivity up to 4%. The frequency of these oscillations is demonstrated to be in good agreement with Lamb theory of free gold shells.

The vibrations of gold nanowires and nanorods are investigated numerically in the framework of continuum elasticity using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. Special attention is paid to identify the vibrations relevant in Raman scattering experime nts. A comprehensive description of the vibrations of nanorods is proposed by determining their symmetry, comparing with standing waves in the corresponding nanowires and estimating their Raman intensity. The role of experimentally relevant parameters such as the anisotropic cubic lattice structure, the presence of faceted lateral surfaces and the shape of the ends of the nanorods is evaluated. Elastic anisotropy is shown to play a significant role contrarily to the presence of facets. Localized vibrations are found for nanorods with flat ends. Their evolution as the shape of the ends is changed to half-spheres is discussed.
When an oscillating line source is placed in front of a special mirror consisting of an array of flat uniformly spaced ferrite rods, half of the image disappeared at some frequency. We believe that this comes from the coupling to photonic states of t he magnetic surface plasmon band. These states exhibit giant circulations that only go in one direction due to time reversal symmetry breaking. Possible applications of this rectifying reflection include a robust one-way waveguide, a 90 degree beam bender and a beam splitter, which are shown to work even in the deep subwavelength scale.
We report direct evidence of enhanced spontaneous emission in a photonic crystal (PhC) light-emitting diode. The device consists of p-i-n heterojunction embedded in a suspended membrane, comprising a layer of self-assembled quantum dots. Current is i njected laterally from the periphery to the center of the PhC. A well-isolated emission peak at 1300nm from the PhC cavity mode is observed, and the enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate is clearly evidenced by time-resolved electroluminescence measurements, showing that our diode switches off in a time shorter than the bulk radiative and nonradiative lifetimes
Based on a microscopic many-particle theory we study the amplification of polaritons in a multiple-quantum-well resonant photonic crystal. For the Bragg-spaced multiple quantum wells under investigation we predict that in a typical pump-probe setup f our-wave mixing processes can lead to an unstable energy transfer from the pump into the probe and the background-free four-wave mixing directions. We find that under certain excitation conditions this phase-conjugate oscillation induced instability can lead to a large amplification of the weak probe pulse.
We report on the buckling and subsequent collapse of orthotropic elastic spherical shells under volume and pressure control. Going far beyond what is known for isotropic shells, a rich morphological phase space with three distinct regimes emerges upo n variation of shell slenderness and degree of orthotropy. Our extensive numerical simulations are in agreement with experiments using fabricated polymer shells. The shell buckling pathways and corresponding strain energy evolution are shown to depend strongly on material orthotropy. We find surprisingly robust orthotropic structures with strong similarities to stomatocytes and tricolpate pollen grains, suggesting that the shape of several of Natures collapsed shells could be understood from the viewpoint of material orthotropy.
