We generalize the family of approximate momentum average methods to formulate a numerically exact, convergent hierarchy of equations whose solution provides an efficient algorithm to compute the Greens function of a particle dressed by bosons suitabl e in the entire parameter regime. We use this approach to extract ground-state properties and spectral functions. Our approximation-free framework, dubbed the generalized Greens function cluster expansion (GGCE), allows access to exact numerical results in the extreme adiabatic limit, where many standard methods struggle or completely fail. We showcase the performance of the method, specializing three important models of charge-boson coupling in solids and molecular complexes: the molecular Holstein model, which describes coupling between charge density and local distortions, the Peierls model, which describes modulation of charge hopping due to intersite distortions, and a more complex Holstein+Peierls system with couplings to two different phonon modes, paradigmatic of charge-lattice interactions in organic crystals. The GGCE serves as an efficient approach that can be systematically extended to different physical scenarios, thus providing a tool to model the frequency dependence of dressed particles in realistic settings.
We develop the theory of hydrodynamics of an isotropic Fermi liquid of electrons coupled to isotropic acoustic phonons, assuming that umklapp processes may be neglected. At low temperatures, the fluid is approximately Galilean invariant; at high temp eratures, the fluid is nearly relativistic; at intermediate temperatures, there are seven additional temperature regimes with unconventional thermodynamic properties and hydrodynamic transport coefficients in a three-dimensional system. We predict qualitative signatures of electron-phonon fluids in incoherent transport coefficients, shear and Hall viscosity, and plasmon dispersion relations. Our theory may be relevant for numerous quantum materials where strong electron-phonon scattering has been proposed to underlie a hydrodynamic regime, including $mathrm{WTe}_2$, $mathrm{WP}_2$, and $mathrm{PtSn}_4$.
Understanding the physics of strongly correlated electronic systems has been a central issue in condensed matter physics for decades. In transition metal oxides, strong correlations characteristic of narrow $d$ bands is at the origin of such remarkab le properties as the Mott gap opening, enhanced effective mass, and anomalous vibronic coupling, to mention a few. SrVO$_3$, with V$^{4+}$ in a $3d^1$ electronic configuration is the simplest example of a 3D correlated metallic electronic system. Here, we focus on the observation of a (roughly) quadratic temperature dependence of the inverse electron mobility of this seemingly simple system, which is an intriguing property shared by other metallic oxides. The systematic analysis of electronic transport in SrVO$_3$ thin films discloses the limitations of the simplest picture of e-e correlations in a Fermi liquid; instead, we show that the quasi-2D topology of the Fermi surface and a strong electron-phonon coupling, contributing to dress carriers with a phonon cloud, play a pivotal role on the reported electron spectroscopic, optical, thermodynamic and transport data. The picture that emerges is not restricted to SrVO$_3$ but can be shared with other $3d$ and $4d$ metallic oxides.
This work presents a method of grouping the electron spinors and the acoustic phonon modes of polar crystals such as metal oxides into an SU(2) gauge theory. The gauge charge is the electron spin, which is assumed to couple to the transverse acoustic phonons on the basis of spin ordering phenomena in crystals such as V$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and VO$_{2}$, while the longitudinal mode is neutral. A generalization the Peierls mechanism is presented based on the discrete gauge invariance of crystals and the corresponding Ward-Takahashi identity. The introduction of a band index violates the Ward-Takahashi identity for interband transitions resulting in a longitudinal component appearing in the upper phonon band. Thus both the spinors and the vector bosons acquire mass and a crystal with an electronic band gap and optical phonon modes results. In the limit that the coupling of bosons charged under the SU(2) gauge group goes to zero, breaking the electron U(1) symmetry recovers the BCS mechanism. In the limit that the neutral boson decouples, a Cooper instability mediated by spin-wave exchange results from symmetry breaking, i.e. unconventional superconductivity mediated by magnetic interactions.
In these lecture notes, we present a pedagogical review of a number of related {it numerically exact} approaches to quantum many-body problems. In particular, we focus on methods based on the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix and on met hods extending exact diagonalization using renormalization group ideas, i.e., Wilsons Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) and Whites Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). These methods are standard tools for the investigation of a variety of interacting quantum systems, especially low-dimensional quantum lattice models. We also survey extensions to the methods to calculate properties such as dynamical quantities and behavior at finite temperature, and discuss generalizations of the DMRG method to a wider variety of systems, such as classical models and quantum chemical problems. Finally, we briefly review some recent developments for obtaining a more general formulation of the DMRG in the context of matrix product states as well as recent progress in calculating the time evolution of quantum systems using the DMRG and the relationship of the foundations of the method with quantum information theory.
