It has been argued that there is biological and modeling evidence that a non-linear diffusion coefficient of the type D(b) = D_0 b^{k} underlies the formation of a number of growth patterns of bacterial colonies. We study a reaction-diffusion system with a non-linear diffusion coefficient introduced by Ben-Jacob et al. Due to the fact that the bacterial diffusion coefficient vanishes when the bacterial density b -> 0, the standard linear stability analysis for fronts cannot be used. We introduce an extension of the stability analysis which can be applied to such singular fronts, map out the region of stability in the D-k-plane and derive an interfacial approximation in some limits. Our linear stability analysis and sharp interface formulation will also be applicable to other examples of interface formation due to nonlinear diffusion, like in porous media or in the problem of vortex motion in superconductors.

We study a model of self propelled particles exhibiting run and tumble dynamics on lattice. This non-Brownian diffusion is characterised by a random walk with a finite persistence length between changes of direction, and is inspired by the motion of bacteria such as E. coli. By defining a class of models with multiple species of particle and transmutation between species we can recreate such dynamics. These models admit exact analytical results whilst also forming a counterpart to previous continuum models of run and tumble dynamics. We solve the externally driven non-interacting and zero-rang
We discuss general features of charge transport in non-relativistic classical field theories invariant under non-abelian unitary Lie groups by examining the full structure of two-point dynamical correlation functions in grand-canonical ensembles at f inite charge densities (polarized ensembles). Upon explicit breaking of non-abelian symmetry, two distinct transport laws characterized by dynamical exponent $z=2$ arise. While in the unbroken symmetry sector the Cartan fields exhibit normal diffusion, the transversal sectors governed by the nonlinear analogues of Goldstone modes disclose an unconventional law of diffusion characterized by a complex diffusion constant and undulating patterns in the spatiotemporal correlation profiles. In the limit of strong polarization, one retrieves the imaginary-time diffusion for uncoupled linear Goldstone modes, whereas for weak polarizations the imaginary component of the diffusion constant becomes small. In models of higher rank symmetry, we prove absence of dynamical correlations among distinct transversal sectors.

We present a new theoretical framework for Diffusion Limited Aggregation and associated Dielectric Breakdown Models in two dimensions. Key steps are understanding how these models interrelate when the ultra-violet cut-off strategy is changed, the ana logy with turbulence and the use of logarithmic field variables. Within the simplest, Gaussian, truncation of mode-mode coupling, all properties can be calculated. The agreement with prior knowledge from simulations is encouraging, and a new superuniversality of the tip scaling exponent is both predicted and confirmed.

We expand upon a new theoretical framework for Diffusion Limited Aggregation and associated Dielectric Breakdown Models in two dimensions [R. C. Ball and E. Somfai, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 135503 (2002)]. Key steps are understanding how these models int errelate when the ultra-violet cut-off strategy is changed, the analogy with turbulence and the use of logarithmic field variables. Within the simplest, Gaussian, truncation of mode-mode coupling, all properties can be calculated. The agreement with prior knowledge from simulations is encouraging, and a new superuniversality of the tip scaling exponent is discussed. We find angular resonances relatable to the cone angle theory, and we are led to predict a new Screening Transition in the DBM at large eta.

We present a comparative assessment of the features of inelastic atom-surface scattering spectra that are produced by several different forms of linear and nonlinear phonon coupling to the projectile atom. Starting from a simple theoretical model of atom-surface scattering and employing several recently developed exact numerical and approximate analytical methods we calculate and compare the scattering probabilities ensuing from each form of interaction and from each calculational scheme. This enables us to demonstrate that in the regime of thermal energy atom scattering from surfaces the dominant contributions to the zero-, one- and multi-phonon excitation probabilities obeying unitarity arise from linear coupling treated to all orders in the interaction.
