The quasiparticle band structures of 3d transition metals, ferromagnetic Fe, Ni and paramagnetic Cu, are calculated by the GW approximation. The width of occupied 3d valence band, which is overestimated in the LSDA, is in good agreement with experimental observation. However the exchange splitting and satellite in spectra are not reproduced and it is required to go beyond the GW approximation. The effects of static screening and dynamical correlation are discussed in detail in comparison with the results of the static COHSEX approximation. The dynamical screening effects are important for band width narrowing.

The electronic structure of Me[N(CN)$_2$]$_2$ (Me=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) molecular magnets has been investigated using x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as theoretical density-functional-based methods. Both theory and experiments show that the top of the valence band is dominated by Me 3d bands, while a strong hybridization between C 2p and N 2p states determines the valence band electronic structure away from the top. The 2p contributions from non-equivalent nitrogen sites have been identified using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy with the excitation energy tuned near the N 1s threshold. The binding energy of the Me 3d bands and the hybridization between N 2p and Me 3d states both increase in going across the row from Me = Mn to Me = Cu. Localization of the Cu 3d states also leads to weak screening of Cu 2p and 3s states, which accounts for shifts in the core 2p and 3s spectra of the transition metal atoms. Calculations indicate that the ground-state magnetic ordering, which varies across the series is largely dependent on the occupation of the metal 3d shell and that structural differences in the superexchange pathways for different compounds play a secondary role.
The quasiparticle band structures of nonmagnetic monoxides, MO (M=Mg, Ca, Ti, and V), are calculated by the GW approximation. The band gap and the width of occupied oxygen 2p states in insulating MgO and CaO agree with experimental observation. In me tallic TiO and VO, conduction bands originated from metal 3d states become narrower. Then the partial densities of transition metal e_g and t_2g states show an enhanced dip between the two. The effects of static screening and dynamical correlation are discussed in detail in comparison with the results of the Hartree-Fock approximation and the static Coulomb hole plus screened exchange approximation. The d-d Coulomb interaction is shown to be very much reduced by on-site and off-site d-electron screening in TiO and VO. The dielectric function and the energy loss spectrum are also presented and discussed in detail.
The stability of the nonmodulated martensitic phase, the austenitic Fermi surface and the phonon dispersion relations for ferromagnetic Ni$_2$MnGa are studied using density functional theory. Exchange-correlation effects are considered with various d egrees of precision, starting from the simplest local spin density approximation (LSDA), then adding corrections within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and finally, including the meta-GGA corrections within the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN). We discuss a simple procedure to reduce a possible overestimation of magnetization and underestimation of nesting vector in SCAN by parametrically decreasing self-interaction corrections.
Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (Py) and Py-Cu exhibit intriguing ultrafast demagnetization behavior, where the Ni magnetic moment shows a delayed response relative to the Fe [S. Mathias et al., PNAS {bf 109}, 4792 (2012)]. To unravel the mechanism responsible fo r this behavior, we have studied Py-Cu alloys for a wide range of Cu concentrations using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The magnetic moments of Fe and Ni are found to respond very differently to Cu alloying: Fe becomes a strong ferromagnet in Py, with the magnetic moment largely unaffected by Cu alloying. In contrast, the Ni magnetic moment decreases continuously with increasing Cu concentration. Our results are corroborated by ab-initio calculations of the electronic structure, which we discuss in the framework of virtual bound states (VBSs). For high Cu concentrations, Ni exhibits VBSs below the Fermi level, which are likely responsible for an increased orbital/spin magnetic ratio at high Cu concentrations. Fe exhibits VBSs in the minority band, approximately 1 eV above the Fermi level in pure Py, that move closer to the Fermi level upon Cu alloying. A strong interaction between the VBSs and excited electrons above the Fermi level enhances the formation of localized magnons at Fe sites, which explains the different behavior between Fe and Ni during ultrafast demagnetization.
Using the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the (non self-consistent) GW approach, the (quasi-particle) band structure is calculated for MnTe in zinc-blende geometry. Different parameters characterizing the electronic structure are computed for an antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic phase and compared with the experiment. The strong Hubbard-type repulsion on the Mn-3d orbitals and the p-d hybridization are seen to be responsible for substantial defects found in the LSDA picture. It is discussed to which extent these can be improved upon by means of the GW approach.
