Magneto-opitcal studies of a c-oriented epitaxial MgB2 film with critical current density 10^7 A/cm^2 demonstrate a breakdown of the critical state at temperatures below 10 K [cond-mat/0104113]. Instead of conventional uniform and gradual flux penetration in an applied magnetic field, we observe an abrupt invasion of complex dendritic structures. When the applied field subsequently decreases, similar dendritic structures of the return flux penetrate the film. The static and dynamic properties of the dendrites are discussed.

Magneto-opitcal studies of a c-oriented epitaxial MgB2 film show that below 10 K the global penetration of vortices is dominated by complex dendritic structures abruptly entering the film. We suggest that the observed behavior is due to a thermo-magn etic instability which is supported by vortex dynamics simulations. The instability is also responsible for large fluctuations in the magnetization curves in MgB2 at low temperatures.
We have performed flux noise and AC-susceptibility measurements on two 400 nm thick MgB$_2$ films. Both measurement techniques give information about the vortex dynamics in the sample, and hence the superconducting transition, and can be linked to ea ch other through the fluctuation-dissipation-theorem. The transition widths for the two films are 0.3 and 0.8 K, respectively, and the transitions show a multi step-like behavior in the AC-susceptibility measurements. The same phenomenon is observed in the flux noise measurements through a change in the frequency dependence of the spectral density at each step in the transition. The results are discussed and interpreted in terms of vortices carrying an arbitrary fraction of a flux quantum as well as in terms of different macroscopic regions in the films having slightly different compositions, and hence, different critical temperatures.
We present numerical and analytical studies of coupled nonlinear Maxwell and thermal diffusion equations which describe nonisothermal dendritic flux penetration in superconducting films. We show that spontaneous branching of propagating flux filament s occurs due to nonlocal magnetic flux diffusion and positive feedback between flux motion and Joule heat generation. The branching is triggered by a thermomagnetic edge instability which causes stratification of the critical state. The resulting distribution of magnetic microavalanches depends on a spatial distribution of defects. Our results are in good agreement with experiments performed on Nb films.
High-quality epitaxial MgB2 thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition with Tc = 39 K offer the opportunity to study the anisotropy and robustness of the superconducting state in magnetic fields. We measure the in-plane electrical resistivity of the films in magnetic fields to 60T and estimate the superconducting upper critical field Hc(0) = 24 +- 3 T for field oriented along the c-axis, and Hab(0) = 30 +- 2 T for field in the plane of the film. We find the zero-temperature coherence lengths xi_c(0) = 30 A and xi_ab(0) = 37 A to be shorter than the calculated electronic mean free path l = 100 +- 50 A, which places our films in the clean limit. The observation of such large upper critical fields from clean limit samples, coupled with the relatively small anisotropy, provides strong evidence of the viability of MgB2 as a technologically important superconductor.
We study the effect of neutron irradiation on the critical current density Jc of isotopically pure polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples. For fluences in the range 1017-1018 cm-2, Jc is enhanced and its dependence on magnetic field is significantly improved : we demonstrate that, in this regime, point-like pinning centers are effectively introduced in the system proportionally to the neutron fluence. Instead, for larger fluences, a strong suppression of the critical temperature accompanied by a decrease of both the upper critical field Bc2 and Jc is found.
